EU businesses on restoring and protecting natural areas will receive a eur 6 million loan / Empresas Europeas de restauración y protección las zonas naturales recibirán un préstamo de 6 millones de euros

European Brown bear, Ursus arctos, Kuhmo FinlandThe European Commission and the European Investment Bank (EIB) have announced yesterday “Bank On Nature” the first loan agreement backed by the financial instrument Natural Capital Financing Facility, this agreement will see Rewilding Europe Capital receive a EUR 6 million loan to provide support for over 30 businesses across Europe, focused on restoring and protecting natural areas. Rewilding Europe Capital is Europe’s first conservation and rewilding enterprise financing facility.

“Nature is essential for our lives, and our economy. The recent successful evaluation of the EU nature directives illustrated this. The rewilding Europe project will be the first of many that the Bank on Nature initiative, building on the Natural Capital Financing Facility (NCFF), will assist in our plans to create rural jobs and protect nature”, explained Karmenu Vella, European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.

A key element of the project is to build a ‘business case for the wild’. The rewilding areas, which could be supported by the agreement signed yesterday, comprise 38 different sites in the Natura 2000 network.

“Biodiversity and economic growth can go hand in hand. As the EU Bank we are committed to investing in projects that support a vibrant rural economy, while also safeguarding our biodiversity and wisely managing natural capital”, said Jonathan Taylor, EIB Vice-President responsible for Climate and Environment.

As well as supporting the creation and consolidation of nature-based businesses, new nature-related business models will be supported in sectors like forestry, water management, sustainable fisheries and tourism. The agreement is expected to create 250 jobs.

With the proposed EIB/EU loan, as lko Bosman, Executive Director of Rewilding Europe Capital explained ”all EU 28 countries will be considered and larger loan sizes will be permitted, including new nature-related business models in sectors like forestry, water management and tourism.”

The Natural Capital Financing Facility (NCFF) is a financial instrument that combines EIB financing and European Commission funding under the LIFE Programme, the EU’s funding instrument for the environment and climate action.

Rewilding Europe Capital was established in 2014 by Rewilding Europe, which promotes wild nature as an important and inherent aspect of Europe’s natural and cultural heritage. As one of Rewilding Europe’s tools, Rewilding Europe Capital finances nature-based businesses and uses a unique levy system to help support conservation and rewilding initiatives. This will also help better implementation of the EU’s Habitats and Birds Directives.

seis-pueblosThe town councils of Rafelbunyol, La Pobla de Farnals, Massamagrell, Museros, El Puig and Puçol have elaborated a joint project to avoid floods. The BLUE LINE project tries to approach the problem of the risks of flooding, which are a common phenomenon in the province of Valencia, and preventing the floods caused by torrential rains. That is why these councils have designed a blue circle (“Blue Line”) that surrounds these municipalities on an intelligent way, using structures, mechanisms and sustainable technologies for the containment and compilation of the rainwater. One tries to turn aside the water of rain of zones with high risk of flood, and in addition recanalize towards zones of containment and storage for later use.

To obtain it, the BLUE LINE project will design urban sustainable drainage systems (USD) in the implied municipalities. The objectives of USD are to minimise the impacts of the generated run-off, both in quantity and quality, and to maximise the opportunities of service and biodiversity, attempting to simulate the natural local drainage existing before the urban development.

To finance this project, councils have presented it as candidate for Urban Innovative Actions’s (UIA) Call of proposals; an initiative of the European Commission to finance innovative solutions for urban challenges in the European territory. All those innovative projects can be financed up to 80 % of the project.

This project relies on the support of the Finnova Foundation, that contributes its competence in dissemination and networking internationally across an extensive network of partners from their headquarters in Brussels and their wide experience in the preparation and execution of European projects.

BLUE LINE is a joint initiative of Rafelbunyol’s municipalities, El Puig, Museros, Puçol, La Pobla de Farnals and Massamagrell, with the collaboration of Diputació de València (the council of the València province),  Instituto Interuniversitario de Investigación de Ingeniería del Agua y Medio Ambiente – Universitat Politècnica de València, Hidraqua, S.A., Green Blue Management, Wetsus and Finnova Foundation.

The principal objectives of Urban Innovative Actions (UIA) are to provide resources to the urban areas to experience innovative solutions that answer to the principal urban challenges, testing how they respond to the real-life situation. It offers the possibility to the urban authorities to demonstrate without risk innovative and creative solutions; not always viable because funding problems.

About Creative Hubs

A creative hub is an infrastructure or venue that uses a part of its leasable or available space for networking, organisational and business development to the cultural and creative sectors. Many co-working spaces in the creative sector refer to themselves as “creative hubs”.

By facilitating co-creation, Creative hubs can help to make out the most of the sharing economy. In some countries, creative hubs also provide valuable solutions to the high rates of youth unemployment by providing not only an inspiring working environment and useful contacts but also to provide an innovative business environment for cultural and creative start-ups. The increasing attractiveness of the concept of creative hubs in the EU can help breathe new life into declined industrial areas, enhance tourism and investment, provide educational opportunities as well as cultural and creative spaces. The project also set up some business support measures as well as a peer-to-peer hubs exchange programme to enhance concrete project development and cross-country learning.

IMG_20170309_173023782_HDRA year after the European Commission presented its action plan in the Circular Economy Package. The 9 and 10 of march was time to present in Brussels the Circular Economy Stakeholder conference together with the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC). To carry out an implementation plan, which includes an in-depth consultation of stakeholders and civil society.

In the two-day event, much emphasis was placed on the concept of circular economy being understood in greater depth and getting the challenge of carrying out real and effective actions that lead to problem solving.

The importance of the different actors of civil society is key in this path because, as Commission Vice-President Jyrki Katainen mentioned, “the policy maker has a fundamental role in problem solving, but he/she must act by listening and considering all opinions and ideas that society offers us”.

To conclude the event and as final objective, it was specified that a platform will be created.  Which in words of Commissioner Daniel Calleja Crespo: “it will be the best platform”. With the aim of minimizing inefficiencies among all stakeholders since, has been consistently said, the success of the Circular Economy will depend on the degree of engagement that exists between all parties to foster circular models.
