Finnova Foundation organises a technical meeting with local stakeholders for the ONE-BLUE project in Athens

  • The project will invite Greek public entities, research centres, and European projects to exchange views on protecting marine biodiversity.
  • Finnova will also attend the annual ONE-BLUE meeting to review the project’s progress in the first 12 months and coordinate the next steps.

16/01/2025, Brussels. Finnova kicks off 2025 by travelling to Athens (Greece) to organize a cross-sectoral technical meeting in the framework of the ONE-BLUE project on Wednesday, January 29. The Foundation, together with IDAEA-CSIC, HCMR and VENTHIC, will organize this meeting to invite public entities, Greek research centres and European projects with a presence in the Greek country to present the project. The meeting can be followed telematically and registration is open at this link.

The technical meeting will be divided into two parts, the first to analyze the progress of the project, and the second to discuss various aspects related to the protection of biodiversity in the oceans. CNR-IRSA will present to the guests the sampling campaigns of the project, while TU Delft and INL will present the novelties in the protocol and treatments of emerging contaminants and antibiotic detection systems.  Next, we will have the intervention of the CONTRAST project, sister project of ONE-BLUE, which will explain the novelties of this initiative that seeks to improve the protection of marine ecosystems and biodiversity against impacts through various methods to combat potentially harmful chemicals in our oceans.

After the details of ONE-BLUE, several actors related to ocean protection will intervene. Triantafyllos Kaloudis, a researcher at the Athens Water Supply and Sewerage Company, will explain his approach to non-selective analysis of environmental samples, linking it to the need to develop quality assurance practices that will lead to the accreditation of laboratories for such non-selective analysis. Ioannis Sitaras, Director of the Hellenic Accreditation System, will then explain the main activities of the Hellenic Accreditation System.

Afterwards, the attendees will exchange views with ONE-BLUE partners through four round tables to discuss different aspects of the project. Juan Manuel Revuelta, CEO of the Finnova Foundation, will lead a round table to analyze how the European Union collaborates with environmental protection through its funding programs. On the other hand, IDAEA-CSIC will lead a round table on antibiotic resistance in nature and its effects on humans, VENTHIC will develop its round table on classification systems for emerging contaminants, and HCMR will explain the benefits of using marine mesocosms for the project.

In addition to the technical meeting, on Tuesday 28th, the partners leading the work packages will present the conclusions of the first year of activity and discuss the activities to be carried out during this year. Jon Larrachea, responsible for communication in the foundation and the project, will analyze the achievements in terms of communication and dissemination during the first year of the project and will establish a timetable for the actions to be carried out during 2025. On the other hand, the other partners leading work packages will also analyze the actions carried out and the approach to be followed during this year.
