NEXT GENERATION EU FUNDS 2021-2027:the Canary Islands are the first autonomous community to organise a massive public-private training meeting to raise funds for economic recovery with more than 700 participants

The Canarian Government is leading a public partnership for training on the Social and Economic Recovery Fund in the Canary Islands, co-organised with the University of Las Palmas, the University of La Laguna, the Canarian Council of the European Movement, the Finnova Foundation and Atlantic Euroconsulting and addressed to public administration, private companies and the third sector in the Canary Islands.

Gran Canaria, 25th of January. The new financial period begins with the milestone of being the largest and most ambitious economic recovery effort in history, with 12% of the EU’s GDP, compared to the Marshall Plan, which at the time was 1.5% of GDP. Spain has been allocated 150 billion euros, so the Canary Islands should make effective use of its quota to meet the challenges of employment, economic recovery, innovation in tourism, sustainable agriculture and sustainable development.

Almudena Estévez, Vice-Minister of Economy and Internationalisation of the Canarian Government, was responsible for the inauguration of the training programme on project presentation in the Canary Islands EUROPEAN FUNDS NEXT GENERATION. Rosa María Aguilar, Rector of the University of La Laguna, stressed the importance of a competitive and diversified economy and Rafael Robaina, Rector of the University of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, underlined the role of universities in the process and the need for a more resilient economy.

The virtual meeting allowed attendees to connect with Brussels, with senior officials from the European Commission and MEPs such as Juan Fernando López Aguilar, Chairman of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs in the European Parliament, who encouraged the Canary Islands to take advantage of the financial opportunities. On behalf of the European Commission, Miguel Gil Tertre, Head of unit in the Task Force RECOVER, participated, as well as Massimiliano Dragoni, senior Official in the Directorate-General for Communication Networks, Content and Technologies (DG CONNECT), who explained the importance of digitalisation and the STARTUPEUROPE methodology to promote entrepreneurship and self-employment. On behalf of DG GROW, Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, Rudy Aernoudt, Chief Economist, spoke, highlighting in macroeconomic terms the EU’s effort and describing NEXT GENERATION as the most ambitious economic recovery programme in history, equivalent to 12% of EU GDP and comparing it to the Marshall Plan, which was 1.5% of GDP.

Lucas Andrés Pérez, Vice President of the Canary Islands Council of the European Movement, announced the start of the « new period of EU funds in the 2021-2027 seven-year period, with an unprecedented economic recovery plan« . For his part, José Manuel Martínez, State Civil servant and Secretary of Valladolid City Council, spoke of the contractual and sectoral management of European funds, which, according to him,  » they represent a great effort and responsibility, after the economic situation caused by the COVID-19 health crisis ».

Juanma Revuelta, CEO of Finnova, insisted on reinforcing the holistic vision that allows synergies and financing projects by identifying the most appropriate financial tool, converting LIFE or Interreg pilot projects that have worked into Next Generation projects, « It is about turning the Canary Islands archipelago into an island laboratory of practical innovation of demonstration projects in water efficiency, renewable energies, agriculture and sustainable tourism, promotion of the blue economy and innovation in the agricultural sector, » said Revuelta. He also urged the Canary Islands to take advantage of its fiscal attractiveness and geographical location as a gateway to Africa and a platform towards Latin America and recommended the public-private participation methodology to help reprogramme 12.3 billion euros that Spain has not absorbed in the 2014-2020 period, a period in which approximately 65% of the funds have not been spent, with Spain being the last EU country in terms of absorption.

During his presentation, Juan Viesca, Director of Funds at the Finnova Foundation, explained the different funds provided by the European Commission and underlined the lack of benefit that Spain has derived from all this, since « it has only spent 20,000 million of the 44,000 million available ». The Next Generation programme adds even more funds, which Viesca describes as « difficult to spend », and proposes that the Canary Islands « exploit the exclusive axis available to them: that of the ultra-peripheral regions, which would mean even more budget for the islands ».

Cristina Tavío, an International Consultant from Finnova Brussels, began her speech with the slogan « for a fair, green and digital recovery » and recalled that « there will be no green without blue, as many of the answers to resilience and sustainability come from the seas and oceans ». The Canary Islands, bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, would be a source for diversifying the economy and meeting the green challenge (or Green Deal), through its maritime strategy. Furthermore, Tavío recalled that « the revolution towards resilience to which the EU is encouraging us is a green revolution which, of course, must also be digital ».

In the closing session, Carolina Lechado, engineer and Director of the EU funds area in Water and Circular Economy, intervened from Tenerife, who alluded to the water problem and stressed the importance of the circular economy and low-cost sustainable desalination: « Of all the water on the entire planet Earth, only 2.5% is fresh water. And of that 2.5%, less than 1% is available for human consumption », explaining different LIFE projects that have become Next Generation.

José Manuel Requena, Director of European Territorial Cooperation at Finnova, mentioned the importance of capitalising Interreg projects in the framework of Next Generation. These are an engine of economic impulse and job creation, based on the good practices and results already worked in the intervention territory. Therefore, he encouraged Interreg MAC and Europe project partners to host a young Canarian to train the necessary professionals in the management of European affairs.

In the area of business recovery, Adrián Noheda, Director of the Innovation and Internationalisation Area of Finnova offered companies and entities with innovative solutions in the field of firefighting and recovery of burnt areas free support in fundraising and legal advice from the accelerator Firefighting Open Innovation Lab CILIFO (24.5 million euros). In the field of textiles and circular economy, he explained the recently approved COSME CircularInnobooster project, which finances start-ups in the textile and sustainable fashion sector to access Horizon Europe and LIFE programmes. This methodology could become a Next Generation project in the Canary Islands: « If we present projects to Next Generation based on projects with seals of excellence or LIFE, we guarantee their continuity and success in their execution« .  Regarding the funds for youth training, Héctor Juan, junior Project Officer in sustainability and circular economy, from Atlantic Euroconsulting Fuerteventura highlighted the opportunities for biodiversity, green employment and circular economy in the Canary Islands. He also encouraged young people to take advantage of the NEXTALENT GENERATION programme and other ones such as Garantía Juvenil to be trained in Brussels as a European affairs manager.

Jorge Núñez, Senior Researcher at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) in Brussels, explained the ways of qualitative and quantitative measurement of the social impact that Covid-19 has had and will have, alluding to GDP and highlighting the high unemployment rate and the environmental problems arising from the current health crisis.

“The real-time fire map was created in 2017 due to the increase in fires, and I was based on data provided by NASA from its VIIRS sensor, which captures high temperatures on the ground, but does not discriminate if those temperatures are forest fires or other reasons. This map meant a before and after since the burning of the Atlantic Corniche and after this disaster many maps similar to the one we had designed in La GIStería appeared ”.

Pedro Ruíz , Director of Innovation at Integrasys SA.

“We developed an application for tracking (positioning) and communication when facing fire, combining various technologies, such as the new European positioning system for the Galileo Satellite. We also mix new communication technologies to ensure that we always have communication at all times and in adverse situations. Thanks to these characteristics the firefighters will be able to face the fire as well informed and positioned as possible, without a doubt a great approach ”.

Leonardo Rico Fernández , CEO of Solid Rain.

“Solid rain is a technology that retains water up to 400 times its weight in water, and we place it at the root, thanks to this the plant will stay hydrated for weeks without the need for water or rain, after that period it returns to its original state of granulate and rehydrates with the next irrigation or rain, reducing the frequency of irrigations. As for the fight against fire, what we do is throw the already hydrated granules at a safe distance towards the fire, creating a stream of solid water, leaving the fire to extinguish itself, and after these fires it is reforested with solid water again and around 70% and 80% of the reforested areas can be saved ”.

More than 100 people attend the third CILIFO webinar as part of #EUGreenWeek2020

21.10.2020. European Green Week (#EUGreenWeek), organised by the European Commission, focuses this year on nature and biodiversity. The Finnova Foundation, the entity which will benefit from the INTERREG-CILIFO project, prepared a localised event to form part of a week which will act as a milestone on the way to the Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity, in collaboration with the University of Cadiz, which is also part of the CILIFO project partnership.

Last Monday, 19 October 2020, the Iberian Centre for Research and Fight Against Forest Fires (CILIFO) held the third event of the CILIFO Project within the framework of #EUGreenWeek – it has planned another in Córdoba, on European Union funding for innovative projects to fight forest fires and protect biodiversity. The event was partially focused on the applications of unmanned aerial vehicles for the extinction and prevention of forest fires.

The highest number of visitors at Zoom was 60, however, the total number of people registered at Zoom for the event was 107 (but not all were connected at the same time).

During the session on Community financial sources for projects with innovative solutions in the prevention and extinction of forest fires and the protection of biodiversity, public entities intervened, such as the Directorate General of European Funds of the Ministry of Finance of the Government of Spain or the Agency for the Environment and Water of Andalusia (AMAYA) – Government of Andalusia. In addition, several initiatives were presented, such as the implementation of drones with thermal cameras to control the dead zones of the fires; or materials that hydrate and when thrown into the fire manage to extinguish a fire by themselves and at the same time increase the percentage of reforestation of the area after the fire has passed.

Below you can read some of the statements of the speakers who participated in the third CILIFO webinar in the framework of #EUGreenWeek:

Adrián Vecino Varela, technical advisor to the Ministry of Finance – Directorate General of European Funds.

“So far we have obtained these data with the aid we have received: 546,430 hectares are receiving conservation aid; 320,142.50 square metres of space in urban areas have been created or rehabilitated; 14,604.39 tonnes more of waste recycling capacity; more than 1.5 million people have benefited from protection against forest fires; and more than 1.5 million people have benefited from flood prevention measures”.

CILIFO_EUGW_2020_POCTEP

Inmaculada Vázquez, from the Andalusian Environment and Water Agency (AMAYA) – Andalusian Regional Government.

“Among the objectives that CILIFO has, we can highlight the strengthening and pooling of cooperation, working procedures and training in the prevention and extinction of forest fires, promoting innovation to prevent large forest fires and improving the response capacity to forest fires on the part of the administrations and authorities involved in fighting them in the three participating regions”.

“In order to give continuity to CILIFO, a new application called FIREPOCTEP has been submitted under the same heading, with the aim of strengthening cross-border systems for preventing and extinguishing forest fires and improving resources for generating rural employment, acting in the development, protection and promotion of the natural heritage, researching and innovating in the environmental field and improving the institutional capacity of administrations and the public sector”.

Luis Carlos Barbero González, Professor of Petrology and Geochemistry and Director of the Department of Earth Sciences – Campus of International Excellence CEI-MAR of the University of Cadiz

On the realistic application of the drones on the ground in fire crisis situations: “the thermal cameras guided the firefighters very reliably to manage the fires by guiding them through the smoke, they should be used in fires that are not very large and in which the economic resources are rather high, in addition the monitoring and control tasks that the drones would have during rainy conditions should be improved”.

Lourdes González, technical coordinator of the CILIFO project at the ONCE Foundation and technology and accessibility expert at the ONCE Foundation

“Through training and the employability of people with disabilities, getting involved in a project in which we promote universal accessibility, in which people with disabilities have no physical barriers to communication and technology. In addition, they carry out training so that if a professional meets a person with a disability he or she can evacuate them in the correct way, communicate with them, etc. And from November (2020), a 15-hour course will begin on what to do when interacting with someone with a disability”.

Juan Viesca, Director of European Funds at the Finnova Foundation.

“The European Commission announced a new programme with 750,000 million euros to replace the crisis and propose new solutions, within which there is the REACT UE programme, a programme that could complement the structural funds with 50,000 million euros. In addition, there is a specific call for the fight and prevention of forest fires as part of the Green Deal call for innovative proposals that ends in January 21, which is a very good opportunity for the speakers at this webinar to be financed by this type of programme”.

Alberto Navarro, Director of Projects, Human Resources and Training at the Finnova Foundation.

Alberto presented two E-learning platforms available within the CILIFO Project to the attendees, with innovations such as gamification processes, encouraging interaction through the website with the students, with mini-games and as the course progresses: “a city is created, comparing the construction of a city with the training that is gradually taking place in each of the students”.

José María Gómez, Chief Financial Officer of Drone Hopper

“Our mission is to develop all the aeronautical platforms and aircraft so that we can consolidate ourselves as a reference in this field and, above all, we want to solve the problem of fire and fire-fighting. Our solution is to offer our services to work 24/7 and try to minimize risks regarding fire fighting”.

CILIFO_EUGW_Drone_Hopper.pdf

Jacobus Benedik, representative of Scodev

“Scodev’s idea is a device by which conventional aircraft could assist in fire-fighting, allowing a common aircraft to collect water from the sea, a river or a lake at a height of 50 feet and pour it over the affected area up to 5 times per hour. This method will expand the resources of any municipality in using fire-fighting tools.

Pedro Ruíz, Director of Innovation at Integrasys SA

“We developed an application for tracking (positioning) and communication when facing fire, combining several technologies, such as the new European satellite positioning system Galileo. We are also mixing new communication technologies to ensure that we always have communication at all times and in adverse situations”.  Thanks to these features, firefighters will be able to face the fire as well informed and positioned as possible, which is certainly a great approach.

Leonardo Rico Fernández, General Manager of Lluvia Sólida.

“Lluvia Sólida” is a technology that retains water up to 400 times its weight in water, and we place it at the root, thanks to this the plant will remain hydrated for weeks without the need for water or rain, after which it returns to its original granulated state and is rehydrated with the next watering or rain, reducing the frequency of watering. As far as fire fighting is concerned, what we do is throw the already hydrated granulate at a prudent distance from the fire, creating a stream of solid water, leaving the fire to go out by itself, and after these fires it is reforested with solid water again and can be saved in around 70% to 80% of the reforested areas”.

Alberto López Casillas technician from the Department of European Affairs, Energy and Tourism of Ávila Provincial Council.

“The aim of the GEFRECON project is to reduce the risk of forest fires in the POCTEP territory by developing and implementing joint plans to raise awareness among other types of actors, so that this type of case can be managed jointly and damage can be minimised. The first of these tools is a GIS (Geographical Information System) in which a landowner or municipality can select an area in which they intend to analyse the potential for use of biomass and the cost of extracting this biomass and taking it to a transformation centre”.

Gilson Batista da Silva, representative of Uffire

“In Uffire we have an extinguishing backpack that feeds back the smoke from the fires, eliminating the oxygen through air expulsion. Right now we are already working on the third prototype of the product, making it more and more powerful. The rucksack, which weighs 9 kg and has an autonomy of 5 hours, can do the same thing as 10-ton fire-fighting equipment, which is a very advantageous ratio for the Uffire product”.

01.10.2020. Organised by the European Commission, the EU Green Week (#EUGreenWeek) will focus this year on Nature and Biodiversity. Finnova Foundation, one of the beneficiaries of the INTERREG-CILIFO Project, has organised a side event in order to take part of a week that will set a milestone towards the Conferences of the Parties (COP 15) to the Convention on Biological Biodiversity.

On Monday, 28 September 2020, the Iberian Centre for Research and Forest Firefighting (CILIFO) has held the second side event for the CILIFO Project in the framework of the #EUGreenWeek in collaboration with GoHub, the open innovation hub of Global Omnium.

The person charged of the opening of the event was Juan Sánchez Ruiz, director of the Regional Operational Centre (INFOCA) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Sustainable Development (Regional Government of Andalusia). He emphasized the importance of the reinforcement of infrastructures jointly used for fighting against forest fires.

In this second event of CILIFO during the EU Green Week, the vice-president of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and Member of the European Parliament, César Luena, participated talking about the project that is going to be submitted to the European Commission to combat forest fires and preserve biodiversity. Among the measures, Luena talked about the post-fire recovery of the affected areas, the protection of freshwater ecosystems —such as restoring rivers—, the regulation of waters in order to avoid ecological disaster, the legal protection of soils, a specific plan for desertification and a European forest policy. His aim is to create a joint action plan for fighting against climate change and biodiversity.

In the first part of the event about prevention, extinction of forest fires and protection of biodiversity, Ana Lourido from the academic domain (University of Ébora) gave her insight about research and combating forest fires. ‘We have an opportunity to make a qualitative and quantitative leap in the fight against forest fires in order to progress in research.’ Afterwards, Javier Madrigal Olmo, senior scientist of the forest fire lab at the Forest Research Center of INIA spoke about the vulnerability face to forest fires and how science and technology can help prevention. As for Javier Cañas Andreu, director of Innovation Projects at EIT Climate-KIC, pointed that the increase of temperatures, the low rate of rain and the subsequent droughts are some of the causes of forest fires in Andalusia.

The topic of the second part of the event was funding and entrepreneurship. María Gil Cabrera¸ director of GoHub Andalucía, and Juan Viesca, EU Funds director de at Finnova Foundation, talked about financing at the European Union and innovative projects in the forest fire sector. It is worth highlighting that the European Green Deal call is now open for fighting against climate change and making Europe climatically neutral by 2050. Adrián Noheda, director of CILIFO’s Firefighting Open Innovation Lab, and David Páez Rodríguez, director de Business Development at the Technological Corporation of Andalusia, spoke about the opportunities for entrepreneurship at protected forest areas.

The event closed with the intervention of Alejandro García Hernández, deputy director of COR, from the INFOCA Plan (Directorate General for Environmental Management and Protected Areas of the Regional Government of Andalusia), who presented the project FIREPOCTEP. On the other hand, Gustavo Viera Ruiz from GESPLAN talked about the success cases on forest fire management.

COMMON CHALLENGES – SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGs)

The aim is to address the SDGs 6, 13 and 15 of the UN in order to innovate in the adoption of urgent measures to combat climate change and its effects, as well as to protect, restore and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, fight against desertification, stop and invert the degradation of soils and stop the biodiversity loss. In addition, the availability and sustainable management of water needs to be guaranteed for fighting climate change.

The Finnova Foundation reaffirms its involvement with young people on International Youth Day

  • Under the motto « The commitment of youth to global action » the UN aims to emphasize the key role of young people in improving national and international political and social processes
  • The health crisis representing a loss of 25 million jobs and the climate emergency are two of the challenges this population faces
  • Thanks to the Finnova Foundation, a total of 400 young people have been able to improve professionally and train in European affairs, using European funds
  • The Finnova Foundation participates in two European projects YES and YOUEUROPE, where young people debate the future of the EU

Brussels, 12/08/2020– Today is the International Youth Day, a date that commemorates the importance of youth participation through actions and initiatives in building a better future. This 2020, the United Nations has especially reiterated the global commitment that this part of the population has in the current challenges of the Covid-19, climate change and political and social responsibility.

There are currently 1.8 billion young people between the ages of 15 and 35 in the world, which represents the largest population throughout history. Due to the health crisis, 25 million jobs are expected to be lost, with this third of the world’s population being the most vulnerable and economically affected. In particular, countries such as Spain have not used 14 billion euros of European funds from 2014-2020 for social integration and work for young people under 30 within the Youth Guarantee framework. This is why the Finnova Foundation, a European leader in the support and training of young people offers them the opportunity to receive professional training through its learning by doing methodology within its headquarters in the European quarter of Brussels, Valencia and Seville.

Since 2012, the Finnova Foundation has trained a total of 400 young people in European affairs, emphasizeing international training programs that will facilitate their incorporation into the labour market. Natalia Cediel, one of the young trainees currently based in Brussels at the Department of Communication and Translation through the Spanish Youth Guarantee Programme, says that « the internship at the Fundación Finnova is a constant learning experience in my field, a professional immersion that fits my situation and many young people like me who have finished their studies during the Covid-19 crisis ». In addition to this declaration, Catalina Mejías, who is doing her internship in the same department, assures that « having the opportunity to work in a situation like the current one in Brussels has been a lifesaver for me and my professional future, since after the State of Alarm was declared I have had to return home after 5 years, just when I was trying to be independent ».

Another challenge in which young people have been involved is that of climate emergency. Currently, this is one of the most commented and debated intergenerational issues. Since 2019, tens of thousands of young students have taken the streets protesting and committed to the cause. Even these funds previously mentioned in Spain would have been used to fight climate change, through new urban waste management, water reuse and the use of renewable energies. For this reason, the Finnova Foundation continues to advocate for innovation in the field of the environment and climate change. It trains young people to make a proper use of these economic resources that they have at their disposal and ignore, due to the poor management of this money by the public sector.

The Finnova Foundation provides training for young people in European funding systems and mentoring in project presentation, including European Commission programmes such as LIFE (focused on climate change), and Horizon 2020 (involved with the Green Pact). José Antonio Troyano, philologist in the Department of Communication, says that the Introduction to European Funding course « has helped me to know and put into practice knowledge about real problems that the European Union is trying to eradicate through programmes such as LIFE. Thanks to this training, I will know how to carry out professional projects on which I have always wanted to embark »

Because of these crises, the European Union has recently agreed on the biggest leap in its budgetary model, since it has established the multiannual financial framework 30 years ago and doubled the resources allocated to cohesion. The 27 partners of the Union, unanimously, have agreed to establish a reactivation fund to alleviate the economic damage of the Covid-19 endowed with 750 billion euros and a financial framework for 2021-2027 of more than a billion euros. Spain will receive 140 billion euros, of which 72 billion will be a non-refundable aid. The reform plan to be presented from Spain to access these funds will give priority to the digital and green transition as well as to the training of students and workers.

Today, political and social responsibility on the part of young people is more than ever a necessity where dialogue is in the first place. That is why, within the European context, raising awareness of the civil population (especially young Eurosceptics) is promoted by encouraging strategic engagement with the media; helping to make their voice heard. According to official data from a Eurobarometer survey, youth participation has increased by 50% more than in 2014, when only 28% participated.

The Finnova Foundation is committed to the involvement of European youth in the political and social life of Europe against Euroscepticism. For instance, the recently approved project « Youth Empowerment for Solidarity » (YES) within the « Europe for Citizens » programme. The proposal emphasises the priority of young people participation through an initiative covering the exchange of ideas between young people from 7 different European cities. This project will promote the social, cultural and political integration of young people in the construction and decision-making processes of the EU, by dealing with basic issues such as education or European values.

« YES » is not the only project that Finnova has carried out to promote young people proactivity within the « Europe for Citizens » programme. « YOUROPE: joining paths to build a better perception of Europe » focuses on the importance of youth for the present and future of Europe. • The Finnova Foundation has welcomed more than 220 fellows at its headquarters in Brussels since 2012 to work in the projects, communication, administration and legal departments
  • One of Finnova’s priority objectives is the education and training of young people, encouraging the return of talent and promoting a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship
  • In addition, Finnova has managed the internships of more than 200 young people in Brussels through European mobility programs such as Talentium or the Dipu te Eurobeca

Brussels, July 15, 2020 – On the occasion of World Youth Skills Day, the Finnova Foundation reiterates its commitment to young people within the framework of SDG 4 of the United Nations 2030 Agenda on quality education, to ´guarantee inclusive, equitable and inclusive education quality and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.’ Finnova, through its two priority lines of action – the education and training of young Spaniards and the improvement of their employability and the return of talent – promotes a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship, of vital importance for the access of young people to better jobs.

‘In recent years, youth unemployment rates in the European Union have risen to unprecedented levels due to the economic crisis or the coronavirus. This makes it more important to improve the employability of young people through programs such as international training practices’, explains Alberto Navarro, director of Training and Employment at the Finnova Foundation. ‘Traineeships are essential to facilitate the transition from the educational system to the world of work, but in many cases, they are carried out incorrectly, such as when they are not used to the maximum advantage. the capacities of young people’, he affirms.

Since 2016, Finnova has welcomed 220 fellows from Spain, but also from other countries in Europe and Latin America at its headquarters in Brussels to improve their training in European affairs, innovation and entrepreneurship from the different areas of the foundation such as those of EU projects, European law and consumer protection, communication and marketing, administration and finance, among others.

‘From the Finnova Foundation, we are committed to young people and their training, that is why we design training programs tailored to each one, attending from the first moment to their interests and motivations and monitoring the day-to-day development of the rooms to detect any problem that may arise and solve it immediately. In addition, we especially take into account the « day after » the scholarship ends, preparing, for example, the candidates to carry out the internships in one of the European institutions such as the Parliament or the Commission’ says Alberto Navarro.

‘It was a great experience’ says Adrián Noheda, a former fellow of the Dipu te Eurobeca in Finnova and, currently, director of the SMEs Innovation Area of the Finnova Foundation in Valencia. ‘It opened many doors for me by allowing me to have an experience in an international environment and by being in contact with European organizations; gave me a close look at how Europe works; in addition, working with European projects offers many opportunities’ he adds.

In addition, more than 200 young people have enjoyed a high-performance stay for a period of between five and seven months in Brussels thanks to the Talentium Jaén mobility program, the Dipu te Eurobeca, the Hebe Plan: Eurobecas, the Badajoz Europe Scholarships , Fuerteventura Europa and Genius de Tarragona that has been managed by the Finnova Foundation. The participants of these mobility programs have also had the continuous support of the Finnova team in Brussels through an individual mentoring program to develop their projects according to their professional interests.

The young beneficiaries of these programs have carried out training stays in organizations such as Microsoft, the Departments of Employment, Education and Culture of the Embassy of Spain, KIC Innoenergy, the Embassy of Panama, CEOE, UNED, Eureka Network, Water Europe , the European Business Angels Network (EBAN), the European Center for Political and Social Studies (CEPS), Turespaña, the European Regions Research and Innovation Network (ERRIN), the Spanish Chamber, the European Schools or the EFE Agency, among many others.

From Brussels, Juanma Revuelta, CEO of the Foundation and the Erasmus Prize of the EU, encourages young Spaniards to take advantage of the training opportunities offered by the European Union. As an example, one of the programs he recommends is the PICE Mobility grant from the European Social Fund, coordinated by the Spanish Chamber and offered through some Chambers of Commerce. These scholarships provide young people with the opportunity to do internships abroad for a period of 3 to 6 months.

Internship at Finnova

The Finnova Foundation participates as a host entity in different European programs so that young people from any country can enjoy training stays in the offices of the European neighbourhood of Brussels, the city of Seville or Valencia. Its learning by doing methodology allows young people to learn on-site and through daily work, which is combined with parallel training in financing and European programs. The objective of the Foundation is to contribute to the development of capacities in the management of European funds. In fact, Finnova recently has the educational gamification platform that it has developed in close collaboration with Play & go experience. It is a virtual space that has a complete course on the LIFE program of the European Commission, thanks to which participants can learn to write a proposal successfully.

Some European programs, such as the Assembly of the Regions of Europe Eurodyssey or the European Social Fund PICE Mobility scholarships managed by the Chambers of Commerce, have open calls at the moment and there are published internship offers to start in the summer months.

More information about the mobility programs managed by Finnova

In recent years, the Finnova Foundation has supported different public entities such as Provincial Councils, Councils and City Councils in creating their own mobility programs. These are some of the most relevant examples:

The Dipu te Eurobeca is a program promoted by the Diputación de València with the support of the Finnova Foundation to carry out internships in organizations and companies in Brussels, the community capital, which also offers mentoring, assistance for uninterrupted emergencies, informative alerts with opportunities, events of interest and training actions (seminars, round tables, fairs and meetings) in relevant areas such as European projects, EU communication, environment and energy, entrepreneurship and employment, among others. This initiative, which is part of the Diputación’s Employment Plan, means providing young people with one more resource when it comes to finding and developing a job upon their return to the province of Jaén. It should be noted that the Talentium Jaén program has been awarded by the Andalusian Government in Brussels for its work promoting young employment.

The Huelva Provincial Council has also supported itself since 2018 in Finnova to launch the HEBE PLAN: Eurobecas annually for the concession of 5 paid scholarships in Brussels that include a travel bag and health insurance. Young people from the province of Huelva, with a university degree and unemployed, have enjoyed six months of paid non-labor internships in Brussels granted through the Eurobeca program and convened by the Local Development Area of the Huelva Provincial Council, as one more commitment to the provincial institution for the training and employment of the youth of the province.

The Badajoz Provincial Council, with the support of the Finnova Foundation, has also launched the first call for the EUROPEAN SCHOLARSHIPS, thanks to which a total of 16 young people from the province of La Paz have benefited from a professional stay in the heart of Europe with scholarships from the Badajoz County Council. Specifically, in this first edition, scholarships have been awarded to 16 young people for five months of professional stay. The beneficiaries also have a university degree or a bachelor’s degree, with a high level of knowledge in foreign languages.

One of the young beneficiaries of this first edition was Carlos Periáñez Fit, who developed his practices at the Delegation of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce to the European Union just a few months ago and who is currently doing his practices in Finnova through the PICE Mobility grant. ‘It has been crucial for me to have had the opportunity to open my professional path thanks to both the EUROPEAN SCHOLARSHIPS of the Provincial Council of La Paz and the PICE Scholarships offered by the chambers of commerce. I am grateful to be able to enjoy this prolonged professional stay, since it has allowed me to be closer to the European institutions and to learn the basic fundamentals of marketing’ he says.

The Tarragona Provincial Council has promoted, with the support of Finnova, a new program to promote the employment of unemployed people in Camp de Tarragona, the Ebro Lands and Baix Penedès. They have launched a call through which three young people from Fuerteventura will enjoy a six-month training period in which prior training in European funds from their region will be combined with a four-month stay in the city of Brussels with the aim of ensuring that learn all the writing, participation and management tools in EU projects in order to raise funds in your community.
