- Finnova is a partner in several LIFE and Horizon projects, programs that finance projects aligned with sustainability and environmental protection.
05/06/2024, Brussels. Today, Wednesday, 5th of June, Finnova Foundation celebrates World Environment Day, an initiative of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Society is experiencing a climate emergency that brings to the forefront the fundamental need to protect the ecosystem in which we live and to adopt more sustainable lifestyles in harmony with nature. For this reason, environmental protection is one of the main pillars of the foundation’s activities. As part of this commitment, Finnova is a partner in three LIFE projects, European Union funding programs that promote environmental protection and climate action, and two HORIZON EUROPE projects, which fund research and innovation.
LIFE COSTAdapta seeks to increase the natural protection of the coast of Gran Canaria, through a system of tidal reefs-tide shelves that provides a solution to the rising sea level. LIFE COSTAdapta started in autumn 2023, will last 7 years and has a total budget of 3,409,864 € (2,045,818 € subsidized by the EU through the LIFE Program).
Another project under the LIFE Programme is LIFE ECOdigestion 2.0.. With a budget of €970,000, the aim of the project is to generate biogas in water treatment plant digesters by mixing putrescible organic waste, transforming wastewater treatment plant sludge into green energy through technology.
On the other hand, LIFE NextFUMIGREEN, with a duration of 4 years and 6 months, will develop natural fumigants based on active substances extracted from plant extracts to control whitefly populations and fungal outbreaks in horticultural crops grown intensively under greenhouse conditions. With a total budget of €2,758,921, it aims to improve food safety and biodiversity and contribute to the professionalization of farmers in the use of biopesticides.
In relation to the projects financed by Horizon Europe, Finnova is a partner of the RES4CITY project, budgeted at 2.5 million euros. This project promotes the development of sustainable renewable energy and fuel technologies in cities through the deployment of an innovative educational program to develop highly qualified human capital. In addition, Finnova coordinates the RES4CITY STARTUP EUROPE ACCELERATHON, an idea accelerator that seeks disruptive and innovative solutions to address the following issues: optimizing electric vehicle charging efficiency, achieving efficient land and soil management, designing green hydrogen production projects and revalorizing grey water.
ONE-BLUE focuses on research into the impact of emerging pollutants and the effects of climate change on marine biodiversity and biota. The results of this research, which will be carried out in different parts of the Mediterranean, Arctic and Atlantic oceans, will contribute to the development of effective policies related to ocean protection. The project, which started in January 2024, has a duration of three and a half years and a budget of more than 6,200,000 euros.
Beyond these projects that are directly related to environmental protection, each and every one of the activities of the Finnova Foundation takes into account the care of nature and biodiversity. The projects of which the Foundation is a partner encourage this type of attitude, supporting the creation of tools that mitigate the adverse effects of climate change.
