- Natura 2000 is one of the key pillars of biodiversity in Europe, representing a model of balance between environmental preservation and human activity.
- Through initiatives such as ONE-BLUE, LIFE COSTAdapta, and FIREPOCTEP+, FINNOVA contributes to the conservation and protection of natural spaces and the species that inhabit them.
05/21/2025, Brussels. The FINNOVA Foundation reaffirms its commitment to the conservation of protected natural areas and the promotion of sustainable development on the occasion of European Natura 2000 Day. This network, a cornerstone of biodiversity in Europe, exemplifies a model of harmony between nature conservation and human activity, principles that FINNOVA incorporates into all its initiatives.
As a partner in projects like ONE-BLUE, LIFE COSTAdapta and FIREPOCTEP+, FINNOVA strengthens its strategy to identify, train, and support entrepreneurs and startups committed to sustainability. These initiatives address key challenges such as marine pollution, climate change adaptation in coastal areas, and wildfire prevention in ecologically valuable zones, many of which are part of the Natura 2000 Network and the European Green Deal. Ultimately, this reflects a comprehensive commitment to protecting habitats and the biodiversity they host.
ONE BLUE: Study of Emerging Pollutants in Marine Ecosystems
ONE-BLUE aims to investigate the effects of emerging pollutants and climate change on the marine environment. With a budget of €6.2 million, funded by the European Union’s HORIZON programme, the project brings together over 100 researchers from 20 scientific groups belonging to 18 institutions in 11 EU countries.
LIFE COSTAdapta: Adaptation of the Coast of Gran Canaria to Sea Level Rise
The LIFE COSTAdapta project proposes an innovative solution to address rising sea levels through the implementation of a system of tidal pools and artificial reefs. This initiative, located on the coast of Gran Canaria, is 60% funded by the European Union’s LIFE programme, with a total budget of €3.4 million.
FIREPOCTEP+: Interoperability and Capacity Building Against Forest Fires and Climate Change
FIREPOCTEP+ aims to strengthen forest fire prevention and extinction systems in the border area between Spain and Portugal (La Raya). The project, led by the University of Vigo, has a budget of €3.32 million and is co-financed by the ERDF through the Interreg POCTEP 2021–2027 programme. Its focus is on interoperability, training, and cross-border cooperation, involving 15 beneficiaries and 2 associated partners.
Ongoing Commitment to Sustainability
In addition to these initiatives, the FINNOVA Foundation is involved in other innovative European projects that promote environmental sustainability. The LIFE NextFUMIGREEN initiative promotes the use of natural biofumigants as a sustainable alternative to conventional pesticides, thus contributing to the protection of biodiversity and ecosystem health. This project, led by FumiHogar in collaboration with B&B Asesores, Comercial Química Massó, BrioAgro Tech, and the FINNOVA Foundation itself, will run for four and a half years. It is 60% co-financed by the European Union’s LIFE Programme and has a total budget of €2,758,921.01.
Finally, the CILIFO project should be highlighted, a key initiative focused on improving the prevention and extinction of forest fires in areas particularly vulnerable to climate change, through cross-border cooperation and the promotion of sustainable solutions.
