Connecting Science and Policy for a Sustainable Future
The session will be opened by Anna Bobo, Senior Policy Officer in Unit C2 (Marine Environment and Clean Water Services) of the European Commission’s Directorate-General for the Environment (DG ENV), who will deliver an institutional address highlighting the EU’s current priorities in marine environmental protection and sustainability. Following this, María Martha Barroso Quiroga, Chemical Engineering Advisor at the Finnova Foundation, will present the latest updates and conduct a review of EU marine water legislation, based on the work developed within the ONE-BLUE project. Her presentation will focus on the current legislative landscape concerning EU marine water regulation, with a special emphasis on the identified gaps in monitoring and controlling emerging pollutants.
The webinar will also showcase the work of other EU-funded initiatives that are actively contributing, from different perspectives to the development of sustainable policies and marine environmental protection. Chris Bowler, Research Director at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), will present updates from the BlueRemediomics project regarding the traceability of the origin of genetic resources used in patent applications, in the context of the WIPO Treaty and the BBNJ Agreement. Priscila Doran, Vice-President of NUCLIO’s Executive Board, will explain how the OTTERS project seeks to integrate citizen science into the education system as a key tool for change. Similarly, Lisa Waldenberger, Scientific Assistant at the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna (BOKU), will present EcoDaLLi project recommendations for the effective implementation of nature-based solutions.
Additionally, the event will feature initiatives framed within the European Green Week 2025. Robert van Spingelen, President of the European Sustainable Phosphorus Platform (ESPP) and representative of the UNEP uPcycle project of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), will share conclusions from the ESPP workshop held from 10 to 12 June in Bergen, Norway. The workshop focused on nutrient management in aquaculture feed, seafood processing, and the valorisation of fish sludge. Likewise, Davide Poletto, Executive Director of the Venice Lagoon Free Project and representative of the SeaClear2.0 and REMEDIES projects, will present the main conclusions from the workshop held on 1 June in Venice, Italy, on the monitoring, collection, and blue circular economy of marine litter. His intervention will highlight innovative and sustainable methodologies, technologies, and solutions applied to marine litter tracking, collection, and recycling, especially of plastics. The session will be moderated by Jon Larratxea, Communication Officer of the ONE-BLUE project and member of the Finnova Foundation team.
ONE-BLUE: Investigación e Innovación
