The 2016 edition of the European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR), which takes place between the 19th and the 27th of November and have the support of the European Commission, mainly focuses on the topic of Packaging waste reduction: Use less packaging!

The EWWR consists of multiple activities taking place all around Europe that promote awareness about sustainable resource and waste management. This year’s edition is particularly focused on packaging waste reduction.

Packaging waste represents a major issue in our current consumption lifestyle, especially when this waste is due to the useless ‘over packaging’ of products.

“Yet, packaging waste reduction does not always require so many efforts and each of us can help to contribute to this task”, explain the organizers of the EWWR.

Packaging refers to any materials used for the containment, protection, handling, delivery and presentation of goods. It has many benefits but in the European Union is now using a very high amount of packaging.

“Each of us produces on average 156.92 kg of packaging waste per year, much of which is avoidable. This quantity needs to be reduced!”, add the organisers.

Because of that, EWWR encourage Action Developers in implementing actions on this theme. A wide range of audiences could take action like Municipalities and Councils, Research centers, Educational institutions, Foundations, Associations and NGOs, businesses and citizens.

To get involved simply register your action before 9 November 2016 on the EWWR website. Also Finnova Foundation, with a large experience in this field and as an event organizer, could help you to organise your action during the EWWR.

The EWWR, which is run by the LIFE project EWWR+ (LIFE12 INF/BE/000459) is an initiative aiming to promote the implementation of awareness-raising actions about sustainable resource and waste management during a single week.

Besides, this week is an occasion to engage around the ‘3Rs’ of waste reduction: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. To date more than 61 500 actions have taken place as a result of the EWWR since its launch in 2009.

La edición 2016 de la Semana Europea de Prevención de Residuos (EWWR siglas en inglés), que tiene lugar entre el 19 y el 27 de noviembre y cuenta con el apoyo de la Comisión Europea, tiene como temática la reducción de residuos de embalaje o envases.

Esta semana promueve la conciencia sobre la gestión sostenible de los recursos y los residuos a través de la organización de múltiples actividades en toda Europa.

Actualmente los residuos de envases representan un problema importante en nuestro estilo de vida consumista. Especialmente cuando estos residuos se deben el “sobreembalaje” de los productos.

“Sin embargo, la reducción de residuos de envases no siempre requiere tantos esfuerzos y cada uno de nosotros puede ayudar a contribuir a esta tarea”, explican los organizadores de la EWWR.

Los envases se encuentran en diferentes materiales utilizados para la contención, protección, manipulación, entrega y presentación de productos. Tiene muchos beneficios, pero en la Unión Europea está utilizando una cantidad muy alta de envases.

“Cada uno de nosotros produce en promedio 156,92 kg de residuos de envases por año, muchos de los cuales son evitables. ¡Esta cantidad necesita ser reducida! “, matizan los organizadoresde la EWWR.

Es por ello, que la EWWR anima a la implementación de acciones para la prevención de estos y otros residuos. Una amplia audiencia puede participar, actuar y registarar sus iniciativas, como Municipios, Diputaciones, Centros de Investigación, Instituciones educativas, Fundaciones, Asociaciones y ONGs, empresas y ciudadanos.

Para participar, simplemente es necesario registrar las acciones antes del 4 de noviembre de 2016 en el sitio web de EWWR. La Fundación Finnova, con gran experiencia en este campo y en la organización de eventos europes, puede ayudar a cualquier interesado a la organización de acciones de sensibilización durante esta semana.

La iniciativa EWWR, dirigida por el proyecto LIFE EWWR + (LIFE12 INF / BE / 000459), es una iniciativa destinada a promover la realización de acciones de sensibilización sobre la gestión sostenible de los recursos y los residuos durante toda una semana cada año.

Además, esta semana es una ocasión para participar y poner un grano de arena en las llamadas ‘3Rs’: Reducir, Reutilizar y Reciclar. Hasta la fecha, más de 61 500 acciones han tenido lugar como resultado de la EWWR desde su lanzamiento en 2009.

Bruselas, 20 octubre 2016.- La Fundación internacional Yehudi Menuhin organizó ayer en el Centro de Bellas Artes de Bruselas, BOZAR, el concierto en honor al centenario del maestro violinista, donde numerosos músicos tocaron durante más de tres horas.

Artistas de la talla de Vadim Repin, DR. L. Subramaniam junto a su hijo Ambi Subramaniam, Valeriy Sokolov o Kerson Leong homenajearon al músico junto a la Orquesta de la Fundación creada por Menuhim.

‘Era un músico comprometido que trabajó toda su vida por la paz, y que dio mucho de sí mismo, como en la segunda guerra mundial donde ofrecía conciertos en hospitales y en el campo de batalla.’ Mariane Poncelet.

Menuhin también se destacaba por  su compromiso en ayudar a los más desfavorecidos y su labor pedagógica, lo que le llevó a crear de una escuela y una fundación.

‘Muchos de estos niños no encajan en una educación normal, aquí tienen su sitio y les damos la mejor educación y valores’. Malcom Singer, director de la escuela Yehudi Menuhim. Por ella, han pasado músicos como los violinistas Nigel Kennedy y Csaba Erdelyi, el violista Paul Coletti, el barítono Jorge Chaminé o Henri Demarquette.

Además, ideó un programa pedagógico llamado Proyecto MUS-E, que actualmente se desarrolla a través de la Internacional Yehudi Menuhin Foundation, cuyo fin es la educación en valores a través de las artes, mejorando el trato entre compañeros, disminuyendo la discriminación y propiciando la tolerancia, explicó Poncelet.

Finnova, junto a la Embajada de España en Bélgica, participó en esta velada ofreciendo visibilidad a la misma entre la población española , así como, produciendo un video comemorativo del homenaje que “Los Violines por la Paz” rindieron anoche al gran Menuhin.

Yehudi Menuhin, que falleció en 1999, es considerado uno de los grandes violinistas del siglo XX. Además, recibió el Premio de la Paz de los libreros alemanes en 1979 y el Premio Príncipe de Asturias de la Concordia en 1997 entre otros.

Yesterday, 20th of october 2016, Yehudi Menuhim international fundation organized the 100 years honor concert for Yehudi Menuhim at the Fine Arts Musseum, Bozar, where many musicians played during more than three hours.

Artists like Vadim Repin, DR. L. Subramaniam & Ambi Subramaniam, Valeriy Sokolov o Kerson Leong honored the musician with the Yehudi Menuhim School’s Chamber Orchestra . ‘

He was a mussician who work during all his life for the peace, and bring his life to it, during the second world war he played concerts in hospitals and Battlegrounds.’ Mariane Poncelet.

Menuhim, helped  unpriviledged children and works for the pedagogical instance. That’s what makes him create the school and the Fundation.

Many of this children dont fit in normal education, here they have they place and we give them good and stong fundations’ Malcom Singer, director of the  Yehudi Menuhim school. Violinists like Nigel Kennedy y Csaba Erdelyi, the violinist Paul Coletti, the baritone  Jorge Chaminé or Henri Demarquette.

Finnova colaborate with the Spanish Embasy in Brussels for the event as a press, interviewing the mussicians and different personalities and filmming a video for the Fundation.

Yehudi Menuhim, who died in 1999, is considered one of the most important violinist of the XX century. He recieved Peace Prize of the German Book Trade in 1979 and the Prince of Asturias Award for Concord in 1997.

14th October, Brussels. – Yesterday Finnova and Partenalia organised the “Workshop: Intermediate Authorities for waste to energy” yesterday in Brussels, under the European Week of Regions and Cities of the Committee of the Regions, to show the role of European local authorities in relation to energy recovery of waste produced in their regions.

The event gathered public authorities, associations, experts, decision makers and academics in order to discuss whether waste to energy is an opportunity for local authorities to potentially manage risks and/or costs whilst improving environmental outcomes.

Manuel Baltar, Vice President of Partenalia and chairman of Diputación de Ourense, opened the event reminding the key role of the local governments. He stated that “Undoubtedly, the environmental approach of our governments should be focused on our actions. Interacting with the private sector to generate sustainable economies, making our administrations allies of businesses and corporations to raise environmental awareness, without leading the process”.

The session covered different issues in the waste to energy, such as EU legal framework and roadmap, circular economy, best practices and case studies and entrepreneurship and European Funding.

Sergio Álvarez from Permanent Representation of Spain to the EU (REPER), Agnė Razgaitytė, of Confederation of European Waste-to-Energy Plants (CEWEP), Vanya Veras of Municipal Waste Europe, Nerea Ruiz Fuente of Waste Management and Environmental Services (FEAD), Manuel Irún of the European Commission, Bartolomé Nofuente of Diputación de Valencia, Juan Manuel Revuelta of Finnova, among other speakers, debated the present and the future policies concerning waste and energy.

“Waste to energy is a key contributor in the circular economy, because in a way it’s allowing us to leave the use of fossil fuels, contributing to energy security and at the same time reintroducing many material and energy in the cycle, reducing also the current high landfilling reached in some areas of Europe”, explained Sergio Álvarez, Environmental Counsellor of the REPER.

In this respect, Agnė Razgaitytė, Communication Manager of CEWEP, remarked that “waste to energy contributes in both circular economy and Energy Union”.

However, as the vast majority of the participant agreed, the actors in the waste to energy process and activities should be involved.

“There is a need of coherence and communications between municipalities and EU policies”, remarked Vanya Veras, Secretary General of Municipal Waste Europe.

Nerea Ruiz Fuente, Technical Officer of European Federation of FEAD, stressed the importance of the private sector also.

Several best practices and case studies were presented, such as “Cooperative district heating in Eeklo” by Jan De Pauw of Ecopower, “Biostabilization of urban wastes” by Iñigo Bilbao of Azahar Energy or “Tetma” by Francisco Vea Folch of BECSA.

Manuel Irún, Project Adviser, EASME – European Commission showed some H2020 Eco-innovation and Circular Economy projects related with the Waste to Energy”, and Bartolomé Nofuentes, Deputy of European Projects of Diputación de Valencia, presented some Valencian projects and initiatives in the circular economy.

“Waste to Energy is at the top of the technology”, stated Veras, however “we have to break the barriers for the innovation”, stayed Juan Manuel Revuelta, Director General of Finnova.

In conclusion, Revuelta presented many EU tools to boost innovation in waste to energy and a platform for start-ups in this field, such as Startup Europe Awards, an opportunity to identify local entrepreneurs. These entrepreneurs may contribute to close the loop.

Las autoridades locales, el factor clave para la valorización energética de residuos

14 de octubre de Bruselas. – Finnova y Partenalia acogieron el evento “El papel de las Autoridades locales en la valorización energética de residuos” ayer en Bruselas, organizado con motivo de la Semana Europea de las Regiones y Ciudades del Comité de las Regiones, para mostrar el papel de las autoridades locales europeas en relación con la valorización energética de los residuos en sus regiones.

El evento reunió a las autoridades, asociaciones, expertos, académicos y responsable políticos con el fin de analizar si la valorización energética de residuos es una oportunidad para que las autoridades locales gestionen los riesgos y costes que la gestión de residuos ocasiona en su medioambiente local.

Manuel Baltar, vicepresidente de Partenalia y presidente de la Diputación de Ourense, inauguró el evento recordando el papel fundamental de los gobiernos locales. “Sin lugar a dudas, el enfoque medioambiental de nuestros gobiernos debe ser el foco en nuestras acciones. Debe existir una interacción con el sector privado para generar economías sostenibles, por lo que nuestras administraciones deben aliarse con sector privado para avanzar en desarrollo sostenible”, explicó.

La sesión cubrió diferentes temas actuales en la valorización energética de residuos en Europa como el marco jurídico de la UE y su hoja de ruta, la economía circular, mejores prácticas y estudios de casos, así como, el espíritu empresarial y la financiación europea en este campo.

“La valorización de energética de residuos es un factor clave en la economía circular. Debido a que, en cierto modo, es lo que nos permite apartarnos del uso de combustibles fósiles, contribuir a la seguridad energética, y al mismo tiempo, volver a introducir muchos materiales y energía en el ciclo; además también permite reducir el alto número de vertederos que existe actualmente en algunas zonas de Europa”, explicó Sergio Álvarez, Consejero de Medio Ambiente de la REPER.

En este sentido, Agnė Razgaitytė, Directora de Comunicación de CEWEP, comentó que “la valorización energética de residuos contribuye no sólo alcanzar los objetivos de la Unión de la Energía, sino también a cumplir con el paquete de medidas de economía circular”.

Los participantes mostraron su acuerdo en que para abordar esta práctica de generación energética se deben implicar a todos los actores relacionados. Incluso, “debe existir coherencia y buena comunicación entre los municipios y las políticas europeas”, comentó Vanya Veras, Secretaria General de Residuos Municipales Europa.

Nerea Ruiz Fuente, Oficial Técnico de la Federación Europea de FEAD, también hizo hincapié en la importancia del sector privado en el proceso.

Durante la jornada se mostraron buenas prácticas y casos de estudio en el campo de la valorización energética de residuos como el caso de la “cooperativa en la cuida belga de Eecklo” presentado por Jan De Pauw de Ecopower, “Bioestabilización de residuos urbanos” presentado por  Iñigo Bilbao de Azahar Energy o “Tetma” presentado por Francisco Vea Folch de BECSA.

Manuel Irún, asesor de proyectos de EASME – Comisión Europea, mostró proyectos relacionados con la economía circular y eco-innovación en el marco del programa Horizonte 2020, y Bartolomé Nofuentes, responsable Proyectos Europeos de la Diputación de Valencia, presentó algunos proyectos e iniciativas valencianas en el campo economía circular.

“La valorización energética de residuos se encuentra en la cima de la tecnología”, expresó Veras, sin embargo “hay que romper las barreras que existen en la innovación”, reivindicó Juan Manuel Revuelta, Director General de Finnova.

Por ello, Revuelta presentó diferentes herramientas que la UE ofrece para impulsar la innovación en este campo y una iniciativa para startups, los premios europeos StartUp Europe Awards, una oportunidad para identificar y reconocer a los empresarios locales, que podrían contribuir a cerrar el bucle de la economía circular, y por tano contribuir a la gestión de residuos.

On 6 October, Start Up Europe launched formally the One-Stop Shop for Startups. DIGITALEUROPE joined the celebration of this milestone by hosting a special DiPP workshop on this theme.

The main object of the workshop was to explain StartupEuropeClub.eu as a single point for startups to access to all the information they need to grow and thrive: find investment and support, attend events, search for open calls, find out about legal rules and connect with other startup players. It also encompasses the Startup Europe Map: the best way to map and connect all startup players across Europe. In this sense the main goal of StartupEuropeclub is to link startup around the world.

It was an opportunity to learn about innovation, technology and research issues of different international experts as Steward McTavish, Director of the University of Cambridge and ideaSpace; Jesús Lozano, Serial entrepreneur; Emilio Corchado, Founder, BISITE accelerator, CEO of StartupOlé and coordinator of STARTUP EUROPE-WELCOME project; and Maurice Beckand, Founder of Crosspring.

Pēteris Zilgalvis, Head of Unit, Startups and Innovation, Digital Single Market Directorate of DG CONNECT at European Commission introduced one of the most important event about Startup in Brussels and Patrice Chazerand, Director of DIGITALEUROPE, was the moderator of the event.

Charlotte Tucker, the responsible for StartupEuropeClub.eu, the One Stop Shop for startups in Europe, explained the initiative, how the web platform works and the web sections. One of the events for startups that she mentioned as an opportunity to grow is StartUp Europe Awards, promoted by the European Commission, Committee of the regions, several members of the European Parliament and implemented by Finnova in collaboration with StartUp Europe. The goal of the SEUA is to identify local role models in each ecosystem of startups across Europe. The local entrepreneurs will become inspirational examples for the new generations that will have a positive impact on changing the entrepreneurship culture in Europe.

The main goal of the workshop was to create an important network among startups through knowledge of European regulation, the European funds, and several projects that can better the connection among startup. In this sense Startup Europe has launched five projects in order to create a connection among local enterprise.

The three key words that can describe the workshop are: internationalization, networking and innovation.
