The 8th Clean Energy Ministerial met Smart Energy Solutions of NOBEL GRID / Soluciones energéticas inteligentes llegan a la 8ª Conferencia Ministerial de Energía Limpia en Pekín

On 6th-8th June, NOBEL GRID project, in which Finnova is partner, presented its smart energy solutions to more than 10.000 visitors in the 8th Clean Energy Ministerial in Beijing, the annual meeting of energy ministers and high-level delegates from the 24 member countries and the European Union.

The 8th Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM8) provided an opportunity to leverage high-level political and private sector leadership to drive ambitious, real-world clean energy policies and actions. Discussions will focus on topics that include optimising renewable energy and energy efficiency policies and clean energy innovations and technologies. The CEM8 was co-located with the 2nd Mission Innovation Ministerial, both aimed to discuss the clean energy transition.

“Those Conferences are a great opportunity to leverage European high level political and accelerate investment in clean energy R&I. The technology exhibition will showcase European breakthrough technologies that contribute to making clean energy widely available and affordable”, stated the spokesperson of Patrick Child, chair of the Mission Innovation Steering Committee and Deputy Director General in DG Research and Development.

The NOBEL GRID project funded by Horizon 2020, exhibited at the booth BC23+24 of the European Commission in the “Technology Exhibition”, was very well accepted by the visitors. Even high-level representatives such as Maroš Šefčovič, Vice-President of the European Commission for Energy Union, Wan Gang, Minister of Science and Technology of China, Rick Perry, United States Secretary of Energy, or James Gordon Carr, Minister of Natural Resources of Canada, visited the booth and found one of the most relevant Horizon 2020 projects in clean energy and smart grids out.

The goal of NOBEL GRID in the exhibition was to show the project main innovations, with the European Commission support, “Smart Energy gives people more control over the way citizens and private sector use energy so NOBEL GRID works on smart energy solutions that provides better quality of life, promoting active participation of final consumers and fostering European competitiveness in the sector”, explained Lola Alacreu from ETRA, the enterprise in charge of the coordination of the project coordinator of NOBEL GRID.

In particular, NOBEL GRID presented its Advanced Smart Meter, called SLAM, with extended functionalities that provides detailed and real time information to all the actors of the Smart grid and energy market to create a more stable, sustainable and secure electricity network.

“By means of the SLAM, the end user will be able to control their Smart devices remotely, and the grid operators will monitor and analyse their energy grid, replacing other complex and expensive devices such as Smart home controllers and network analysers”, explained the representative of ETRA. She also added that “ these solutions can be replicated in other areas; in fact, some visitors of the exhibition area have asked for a potential pilot site outside Europe, such as Jos Gorvett, the director of Climate change group from the Government of South Australia”.

More than 10.000 visitors all around the world found out those solutions of NOBEL GRID, as well as, its 21 partners from 11 European countries, among which there are 5 pilot sites in Spain, Belgium Italy, Greece and United Kingdom.

The Innovation and Networks Executive Agency of the European Commission has selected NOBEL GRID, out of more than 200 European projects, to be exhibited together with ESPRIT and POWERKITE projects.

While the Clean Energy Ministerial provides a forum for discussing how currently available technologies can be deployed on a wide scale to drive ambitious clean energy policies, Mission Innovation focuses on research and development and on investment in clean energy innovation for the new technologies of the future. “Mission innovation is about global leadership in developing the clean energy landscape of the future, based on a collective commitment to accelerate the pace of clean energy innovation”, said Maroš Šefčovič, Vice-President for Energy Union of the European Commission.

Finnova organized yesterday 8th June a workshop entitled “Green Jobs and Entrepreneurship: Public-private partnership and EU funds”. This event took place in the context of the Green Week of the European Commission, which was focused this year on “Green Jobs for a greener future”.

The speakers of today’s event were specialists from different fields, including public administration, renewable energies, research, circular economy and training programmes. Most of them highlighted the variety of opportunities existing in Europe regarding entrepreneurship and jobs creation. Bartolomé Nofuentes, the Representative of European Issues in the County Council of Valencia, dealt with the way public administrations can conjugate innovation, entrepreneurship and funding in order to foster green jobs.  On the other hand, Alvaro Sanchez, doctor of the technological institute of the University Pontficia Comillas of Madrid, explained that the actual and future changes in the field of energy and information and communication technologies are creating new opportunities for entrepreneurs and start-ups to growth. He added that we have to take advantage of these opportunities now, in few years it will be too late” for this reason he explained that “It is extremely important that all citizens get involved”.

This workshop also emphasizes the importance of European and Spanish training programmes fostering entrepreneurship and the creation of green jobs. “Today there are many opportunities to have training experience in the European Union” stated Juan Manuel Revuelta, the General Director of Finnova.  The Erasmus for Young Entrepreneurs programme is a good example of an initiative boosting entrepreneurship, “the company is benefiting from the new entrepreneur’s ideas and the entrepreneur benefits from company’s experience, it’s a win-win situation” explained Alberto Navarro, the responsible of Employment and Youth of the EU Training Platform.

Finally, there are European funds that enable to boost green jobs, such as the SME Instrument, Horizon 2020 or LIFE Programme. These funds allow to develop innovative projects leading the way to sustainable and green growth. Nobel Grid is a good example – a European project which offers advanced tools and ICT services to all actors in the Smart grid and retail electricity market in order to ensure benefits from stable grids and clean electricity. Nobel Grid received 11, 7 million euros from the Horizon2020 programme. As Ana Nava, the energy expert of Nobel Grid, said “this project will create a lot of green jobs” and can lead the way to other innovative projects. Juan Manuel Revuelta added that “Spain is the leader in obtaining these European funds”.

This Green Jobs day organized by Finnova Foundation was supported by the Spanish programme Hablamos de Europa, a meeting point for Spanish citizens to speak about the European Union and to share their experiences.

Our vision is “Variable Geometry for Variable Wind”, and we pursue it through our patented disruptive energy conversion concept which allows us to maximize production in any variable wind. Thanks to Windcity’s simple mechanics technology, we are able to harvest up to 80% more energy compared to competitors.

We contribute to a shift towards the Circular Economy by recovering and exploiting a relevant yet so far underestimated  class of wind, that of variable wind. Our arms are designed to adjust the blades’radius and inclination, allowing our turbine to work in complete autonomy without the need of any additional energy source.

Windcity turbines are particularly suited for urban and suburban areas, where wind streams are disrupted by cities’ orography while, at the same time, being generated by vehicular flows. By recovering such wasted resource into energy, we strive to turn cities into sustainable realities.

Neuron Guard is a life-saving medical device with the aim to revolutionize the treatment of brain damages and improve the life of patients, with also a significant reduction of healthcare costs.

The Acute Brain Damage is one of the most emerging challenges of modern Emergency Medicine. We have to act soon because after just 8 minutes a portion of the brain is irreversibly compromised. Early on-site treatment is the key to protect the brain.

The solution is composed by a cooling/warming collar powered by a smart control unit (the size of a small briefcase). The collar transforms the neck into a natural heat exchanger. It is quicker to act on brain tissue but can also function as total body temperature adjusting device if required. The control unit collects all the data of the treatment and transmits them to the Emergency Response System. We are the only NON-INVASIVE DEVICE capable of both COOLING and WARMING.

United Nations and EU Connecting People with Nature / Naciones Unidas y UE conectan a las personas con la naturaleza

Today all countries are celebrating the World Environment Day under the topic “Connecting people with nature” with the aims to encourage people to approach to nature and appreciate and be aware of its value.

“The celebration of this day provides us with an opportunity to broaden the basis for an enlightened opinion and responsible conduct by individuals, enterprises and communities in preserving and enhancing the environment. Since it began in 1974, it has grown to become a global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated all over the world” states United Nations

The main celebrations of the day will take place in Canada since the North American country hosts the 2017 World Environment Day.  There is no doubt that Canada is a good example of country linked to the environment as it has a lot of natural resources and big national natural parks, “abundant natural resources also support the country’s economic prosperity – through tourism as well as sustainable use – and the health and well-being of its 36 million inhabitants” points out United Nations.

The World Environment Day is aligned with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of the United Nations and with its Sustainable Development Goals, in particular the goals 14 “Life below water” and 15 “Life on land” which aim to “conserve and sustainable use the oceans, seas and marine resources” and to “manage sustainable forests, combat desertification, halt and reserve land degradation and halt biodiversity loss”.

The World Environment Day reminds the importance of biodiversity and natural places, which corresponds to fundamental themes of the European Union. Indeed, it is one of the first region regarding environment protection and climate action. For instance the Natura 2000 network of the European Union is protecting natural areas and threatened species in 20% of the EU area. Moreover the EU is funding many environmental projects through the LIFE programme, an important working area of Finnova.

In this sense, the Commissioner of Environment of the European Commission Karmenu Vella has called the European citizens on Twitter to join the day and support the initiatives all around EU, as well as to share their favourite places to show they are #WithNature.

In order to celebrate the beauty of European biodiversity many events are organized in many European cities, such as a conference on “Eu action plan for nature, people and the economy” tomorrow at the Committee of the Regions in Brussels, which will be broadcasted live.

FINNOVA Supporting World Environment Day

Finnova foundation supports and joins this day since it works within the fields of new sustainable development and environment and provides expertise in European funding programmes that protect the environment and boost green growth such as Horizon 2020 (including SME Instrument), LIFE and INTERREG.

Moreover, Finnova boosts entrepreneurship on green areas thanks to its different initiatives such as Startup Europe Accelerator or the StartUp Europe Awards 2016 and 2017.

The final ceremony of Startup Europe Awards 2016 will take place next 7th of June in the European Parliament in Brusselas. For 2016 the Green category has 10 finalists:

The LIFE Info Day gave the key for a successful project proposal

Last Wednesday, the 31st of May, Finnova Foundation attended to the LIFE info day taking place during the Green Jobs Summit of the European Commission.

Daniel Calleja, the Director General of the Directorate General for Environment of the European Commission, opened the day by highlighting the key importance of the creation of green jobs and sustainable growth. According to him, we have to use the challenges related to environment and circular economy as an instrument to create growth and jobs in the European Union.

The LIFE 2017 Call for Project Proposals session followed this idea. It was focused on the new project opportunities to create Green Jobs and Growth and was composed of two main parts: the explanation of the LIFE programme and tips to obtain it, and the presentation of three examples of successful LIFE projects.

The different speakers, specialists in the LIFE programme, told the main objectives of the programme. They enhanced the novelties of the New LIFE 2014-2020, in particular the establishment of the Environment and Climate action subprograms, and the new structures of the project. For this year no major changes were made, only a few clarifications, and they increased the budget for environment and climate subprograms from €337 million to more than €373 million.

Fabio Leone, the Head of Sector of Unit LIFE and eco innovation, highlighted the importance of Close to Market projects which correspond to projects implementing environmental or climate solutions in close to market conditions, which means in the short and medium term. These kind of projects are especially suitable for environment resource efficiency and climate change mitigation subprograms. Source: Fabio Leone, Head of Sector, Unit LIFE and Eco-Innovation, EASME, LIFE 2017 Call for Project Proposal, Green Jobs Summit, 31st of May 2017.

The speakers also provided advice about project design and financial aspects to increase the chances of projects which are subject to many challenges. Indeed, according to Fabio Leone there is important competition between the projects and it takes a lot of time and money to submit a good and well prepared proposal.

Tips about project design:

At the end of the session three successful LIFE projects were presented, and each project manager offered a tip to present a successful project proposal.

LIFE for Danube Sturgeons is a project which aims to the “sustainable protection of lower Danube Sturgeons by preventing and counteracting poaching and illegal wildlife trade”. Her tip to develop a successful LIFE project was to understand really well the problem and to look back after the start of the project.

BIOHEC-LIFE is a French-belgian project producing Biofuel with used oil coming from restaurant and industries. This project has been submitted twice to the LIFE programme, for this reason, the advice of Michel Millares, project manager, is of never giving up, and never forgetting the strengths of the project.

LIFE Steppe Farming is a project developed in Castilla-La-Mancha in Spain which aims to protect steppe birds with the help of farming communities. The project manager, Blanca Hurtado, recommends to think in a long-term perspective, and that all these projects can have an impact on EU policies.

BRAINIAC BEATS, EL GANADOR DE MUSIC CONTEST SEUA 2016, RELATA SU TRAYECTORIA MUSICAL / BRAINIAC BEATS, THE MUSIC CONTEST WINNER OF SEUA 2016, TALKS ABOUT HIS MUSICAL PATH

____________________________________________________________________

Brainiac Beats or The Brain is the 36-year-old artist from Almería who has been recognized as “MUSIC CONTEST WINNER” for the Startup Europe Awards 2016. Consequently, his song will be part of the musical representation of the ceremony of 7th June.

He tells us about the origin of his pen name: “In the summer of 1997, when I started in the music world with my group “Rhajha”, they christened me with a new name, The Brain, because I was always creating new plans and having new ideas. A few years later, my friend from Canada, Nick, gave me the idea of being nicknamed Brainiac for international works.

He claims that passion for music started at the age of 4 or 5, when he listened to different styles of music with his father, from folklore coming from everywhere to classical music: “I got interested naturally in the hip hop culture and in its different facets, like the graffiti. At first, I only recorded fragments of music in a cassette that it could use afterwards to modify or remix and so doing my first creations.”

The Brain tells that he spent some years learning to play the piano and studying solfeggio. It was not until he was 17 when he started collecting CD’s, learning to DJ and to scratch.

He also mixes and masters audio professionally in his own study: “I work with all kinds of clients, but especially in the area of black music (hip hop, R&B and urban music). When I was living in Madrid I released my own record label to be able to edit my own music in vinyl. There, I developed tasks of administration, accountancy, management, promotion, etc… Currently, I also work as adviser other artists and producers, both in artistic development and in digital marketing”.

As every artist, he needs inspiration and says, “I try that the inspiration can always find me working in something, as Picasso said. I open the musical creation programme and I start to lead some instruments so I play with them until a sound makes me imagine something more than might accompany it. For the music of SEUA16, I imagined something epic and organic and at the same time elegant, but especially modern and contemporary for the entrepreneurial young people; that is why I have used piano and strings to get a more formal tone, and a drum-set as more striking and current instrument.”

He considers important the fact of being selected as “soundtrack” of a project that rewards companies of young people that have a business vision and put it bravely into practice. “During all my work trajectory I have collaborated with many projects in almost 20 years in the musical industry. It is a great step for my career that my music has been selected by the first time for a European project. I believe in the ideal of which union is strength, the sense of community and what is chased by the European Union, for what this prize is a pleasure and a real honour.

Finally, he confesses: “The crisis brought me to Belgium, as everybody. But actually I needed to undertake a new adventure with my wife, to go out of “safe zone” to learn and to explain myself by new challenges. If I could go back in the time, I would turn it to doing one and thousand times because the personal and professional growth that has provided Belgium to me since I came, has been enormous. “
