The second day of the Womanation Congress was attended by more than 50 leading women, including the presence of the European Commissioner for Digital Economy and Society Mariya Gabriel

The second day of the Womanation Congress, entitled “Women’s Congress for the whole Society”, opened with the intervention of the European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth, Mariya Gabriel, who emphasised “the need to support women’s initiative in entrepreneurship and innovation and the need to promote digital skills and STEM education in girls and women”.

The Womanation Congress organised by the Mesa de Ingeniería Valenciana (MIV) is co-organised by Technovation Girls and the Finnova Foundation. This meeting was also supported by the Startup Europe Awards (SEUA), the Iberian Blockchain Institute and the Business Market network, among others.

Thanks to the impulse of Regina Monsalve, president of COITVC, Angélica Gómez, Dean of COGITI Valencia, Maria José CEO of Talent Growth Management and many other women, the event has been a success.

Brussels, 12 February 2021 – The Womanation Congress, the first all-female digital congress, ended up with more than 350 registered participants on the 12th and with a reach of more than 2000 girls on the 11th. In total, there were more than 70 presentations on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) topics. Sandra Gómez, Deputy Mayor of Valencia City Council, emphasised the need to “make women visible in STEM areas and to transmit, from a very early age, technology and science in order to fight against the gender gap and the digital divide”.

The virtual event counted with the participation of different influential women, including Commissioner Mariya Gabriel, MEP Susana Solís, member of the Special Committee on Artificial Intelligence in the Digital Age, Isabel Benjumea, Vice-Chair of the Committee on Regional Policy in the European Parliament and Natalia Martínez Páramo, Deputy Head of Unit of DG Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, who spoke about the COSME programme, the WEgate and the EEN network.

Susana Solís stressed the importance of education to increase the visibility of women in STEM fields and pointed out that “we need more female references in textbooks”. She also insisted on “the importance of improving things in the workplace, with policies that reconcile work and personal life”. For her part, Isabel Benjumea declared that “all those women who are now thinking of taking the risk and becoming entrepreneurs, what they have to feel is that in Europe it can be done, in Europe, today, it is possible“.

While the first day focused on girls and the younger population and its main objective was to revalue the role of women in scientific and technological professions through the presentation of innovative projects, recreational and educational activities and different innovative challenges were launched for girls to join them, for example, The Finnova Foundation prepared ten different challenges related to innovative fields such as cultural and sustainable tourism or circular economy. The second day was more focused on making female talent visible, for which, as Mariya Gabriel pointed out during her speech, “we have all the support and commitment from Europe“. To this end, there are multiple programmes, grants and aid, such as the PICE programme, the Robert Schuman grant or the platform for finding training placements in Europe, Next Talent Generation, among many others.

Today’s event was organised into five round tables divided into themes in which each participant was able to present their personal vision and the way in which they have taken part in this female technological, scientific and digital revolution, presenting the different projects and measures they have adopted. Yolanda de Aguilar, FYCMA’s general director, underlined the importance of collaborative systems and pointed out that “At FYCMA, we assume our strategic role in the reactivation, which is why we have re-armed ourselves digitally and technologically to continue boosting business activity and the convergence of innovation, knowledge and talent”.

Topics such as climate changecultural and digital transformation, the importance of local and global sustainability, the circular economyeducation, the impact of responsible business conduct and the importance of science and research  were discussed, and dozens of cutting-edge projects were presented. Lola Bordás, president of Fundadoras.CHALLENGES Next Digital Generation ODS-EU: Interreg Cilifo, indicated during her speech that “digitalisation for traditional sectors is a turning point to achieve scalable results”.

Pilar Ezpeleta, Director General of the Valencian Ministry of Universities, pointed out four risks that we cannot lose sight of: “the technological, digital, gender, educational, cultural and economic divide”. “If our girls and teenagers believe in themselves they will have a high level of well-being, we will have women prepared to face whatever comes their way”, said Petra María Pérez, emeritus professor in Anthropology Theory at the UV, who also believes that education is essential in the social, cultural and digital revolution we are witnessing. Anaïs P. Figueras, Director of Communication at Google Spain & Portugal, added that “we must approach technology as we approached English a few years ago”.

Juliana Herrero, chemical engineer and expert in Renewable Energy, director of Waste2Energy and Maria José Tárrega, Head of process at Global Omnium, LIFE ECOdigestion 2.0, presented their projects and emphasised the need to rethink the energy transition and “see which path we are going to take to meet the objective of climate neutrality in 2050”. Ainhoa Raso, Vice President of Innovation and New Developments in Tourism, presented the HiCard (Health Identification Card), a card with our medical data (vaccinations, allergies, treatments…) fully encrypted and secure on our mobile phone thanks to a Blockchain network. “Now, in times of Covid, we have dedicated a section where you can upload PCR results or if you are vaccinated,” said Raso.

The Womanation Congress, which is based on data such as the fact that, in Spain, only 17% of entrepreneurs are women, that 85% of women are not part of any Sillicon Valley startup or that 59% of Spanish startups do not have any women among their founding members or co-founders, encourages women to recycle themselves in these times of health crisis and to grow professionally since, “it is from courage that opportunities are best generated”, as Ezpeleta pointed out. Elena Contioso-Fleming, CLC manager at EIT Digital Spain, stated that “Spain is lagging behind other European countries in everything related to digitalisation, which is why EIT Digital provides co-funding for projects, supports scale-ups and opens the way for entrepreneurs in Spain to cross the Spanish border and reach other European countries”.

The composition of the roundtables has always followed the same pattern: a manager from a leading company, an independent expert, a talented young woman and a woman with responsibility within the public administration, moderated by a media manager, including, for example, Marta García Aller, a science and technology journalist from El Confidencial, who moderated roundtable 4.

Some of the tables have had a section called “One to One“, a series of short interviews from one influential woman to another, thanks to which we have been able to listen to personalities such as María Tato, Director of women’s football of the RFEF, in conversation with Marina Gassent, General Director of Valencia CF Femenino, who defended the role of women in the world of football, and Leticia Chen, president of the Chamber for Spanish-Chinese Cooperation, who together with Carmen Sanz, president of the Spanish-Norwegian Chamber of Commerce, spoke about the collaboration projects in R+D+i between Europe and China for 2021.

At each table, a different challenge was launched in accordance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Programme, from which each participant was able to develop their presentation. Mercedes Iborra, Co-founder of Visual Nacert, said: “It is not only about developing companies, but also about having a positive impact on society”, referring to the need to take care of the environment. Yolanda de Aguilar: “I strongly believe in collaborative systems. My work has always been in the world of trade fairs and congresses, such as IFEMA, where I was in charge of FITUR, and this led me to see that without public-private collaboration there is no way”.

Thanks to the institutional and business support received, the hashtag #WomanationCongress has become a trendy topic in 11 countries and in almost 50 cities around the world, which is a clear sign of the international reach of the Womanation congress, which has also featured speakers from Panama and Argentina, such as María Ramallo, Gender Coordinator at the General Directorate of Social Integration (SECISYU) in the Government of the City of Buenos Aires (Argentina) and Malú Ramos, environmental engineer at Finnova, from Panama, who, despite the time difference, did not want to miss this multitudinous event.

Ramallo stressed the importance of “generating synergy, networks, alliances and, above all, collaboratively thinking about triple impact production and business models with a focus on women and people in vulnerable situations, is one of the ways in which we can promote their autonomy. In many cases, self-entrepreneurship is precisely the engine that generates employment”, a thought shared by many of our guests, such as Yolanda de Aguilar, who pointed out during her speech that “only through collaboration we can progress, together with innovation and technology”. Natalia Mártinez Páramo ended her speech by stressing that “support for women entrepreneurs must have special features to address the obstacles faced specifically by women”.

NEXT GENERATION EU FUNDS 2021-2027:the Canary Islands are the first autonomous community to organise a massive public-private training meeting to raise funds for economic recovery with more than 700 participants

The Canarian Government is leading a public partnership for training on the Social and Economic Recovery Fund in the Canary Islands, co-organised with the University of Las Palmas, the University of La Laguna, the Canarian Council of the European Movement, the Finnova Foundation and Atlantic Euroconsulting and addressed to public administration, private companies and the third sector in the Canary Islands.

Gran Canaria, 25th of January. The new financial period begins with the milestone of being the largest and most ambitious economic recovery effort in history, with 12% of the EU’s GDP, compared to the Marshall Plan, which at the time was 1.5% of GDP. Spain has been allocated 150 billion euros, so the Canary Islands should make effective use of its quota to meet the challenges of employment, economic recovery, innovation in tourism, sustainable agriculture and sustainable development.

Almudena Estévez, Vice-Minister of Economy and Internationalisation of the Canarian Government, was responsible for the inauguration of the training programme on project presentation in the Canary Islands EUROPEAN FUNDS NEXT GENERATION. Rosa María Aguilar, Rector of the University of La Laguna, stressed the importance of a competitive and diversified economy and Rafael Robaina, Rector of the University of Las Palmas in Gran Canaria, underlined the role of universities in the process and the need for a more resilient economy.

The virtual meeting allowed attendees to connect with Brussels, with senior officials from the European Commission and MEPs such as Juan Fernando López Aguilar, Chairman of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs in the European Parliament, who encouraged the Canary Islands to take advantage of the financial opportunities. On behalf of the European Commission, Miguel Gil Tertre, Head of unit in the Task Force RECOVER, participated, as well as Massimiliano Dragoni, senior Official in the Directorate-General for Communication Networks, Content and Technologies (DG CONNECT), who explained the importance of digitalisation and the STARTUPEUROPE methodology to promote entrepreneurship and self-employment. On behalf of DG GROW, Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, Rudy Aernoudt, Chief Economist, spoke, highlighting in macroeconomic terms the EU’s effort and describing NEXT GENERATION as the most ambitious economic recovery programme in history, equivalent to 12% of EU GDP and comparing it to the Marshall Plan, which was 1.5% of GDP.

Lucas Andrés Pérez, Vice President of the Canary Islands Council of the European Movement, announced the start of the « new period of EU funds in the 2021-2027 seven-year period, with an unprecedented economic recovery plan« . For his part, José Manuel Martínez, State Civil servant and Secretary of Valladolid City Council, spoke of the contractual and sectoral management of European funds, which, according to him,  » they represent a great effort and responsibility, after the economic situation caused by the COVID-19 health crisis ».

Juanma Revuelta, CEO of Finnova, insisted on reinforcing the holistic vision that allows synergies and financing projects by identifying the most appropriate financial tool, converting LIFE or Interreg pilot projects that have worked into Next Generation projects, « It is about turning the Canary Islands archipelago into an island laboratory of practical innovation of demonstration projects in water efficiency, renewable energies, agriculture and sustainable tourism, promotion of the blue economy and innovation in the agricultural sector, » said Revuelta. He also urged the Canary Islands to take advantage of its fiscal attractiveness and geographical location as a gateway to Africa and a platform towards Latin America and recommended the public-private participation methodology to help reprogramme 12.3 billion euros that Spain has not absorbed in the 2014-2020 period, a period in which approximately 65% of the funds have not been spent, with Spain being the last EU country in terms of absorption.

During his presentation, Juan Viesca, Director of Funds at the Finnova Foundation, explained the different funds provided by the European Commission and underlined the lack of benefit that Spain has derived from all this, since « it has only spent 20,000 million of the 44,000 million available ». The Next Generation programme adds even more funds, which Viesca describes as « difficult to spend », and proposes that the Canary Islands « exploit the exclusive axis available to them: that of the ultra-peripheral regions, which would mean even more budget for the islands ».

Cristina Tavío, an International Consultant from Finnova Brussels, began her speech with the slogan « for a fair, green and digital recovery » and recalled that « there will be no green without blue, as many of the answers to resilience and sustainability come from the seas and oceans ». The Canary Islands, bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, would be a source for diversifying the economy and meeting the green challenge (or Green Deal), through its maritime strategy. Furthermore, Tavío recalled that « the revolution towards resilience to which the EU is encouraging us is a green revolution which, of course, must also be digital ».

In the closing session, Carolina Lechado, engineer and Director of the EU funds area in Water and Circular Economy, intervened from Tenerife, who alluded to the water problem and stressed the importance of the circular economy and low-cost sustainable desalination: « Of all the water on the entire planet Earth, only 2.5% is fresh water. And of that 2.5%, less than 1% is available for human consumption », explaining different LIFE projects that have become Next Generation.

José Manuel Requena, Director of European Territorial Cooperation at Finnova, mentioned the importance of capitalising Interreg projects in the framework of Next Generation. These are an engine of economic impulse and job creation, based on the good practices and results already worked in the intervention territory. Therefore, he encouraged Interreg MAC and Europe project partners to host a young Canarian to train the necessary professionals in the management of European affairs.

In the area of business recovery, Adrián Noheda, Director of the Innovation and Internationalisation Area of Finnova offered companies and entities with innovative solutions in the field of firefighting and recovery of burnt areas free support in fundraising and legal advice from the accelerator Firefighting Open Innovation Lab CILIFO (24.5 million euros). In the field of textiles and circular economy, he explained the recently approved COSME CircularInnobooster project, which finances start-ups in the textile and sustainable fashion sector to access Horizon Europe and LIFE programmes. This methodology could become a Next Generation project in the Canary Islands: « If we present projects to Next Generation based on projects with seals of excellence or LIFE, we guarantee their continuity and success in their execution« .  Regarding the funds for youth training, Héctor Juan, junior Project Officer in sustainability and circular economy, from Atlantic Euroconsulting Fuerteventura highlighted the opportunities for biodiversity, green employment and circular economy in the Canary Islands. He also encouraged young people to take advantage of the NEXTALENT GENERATION programme and other ones such as Garantía Juvenil to be trained in Brussels as a European affairs manager.

Jorge Núñez, Senior Researcher at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) in Brussels, explained the ways of qualitative and quantitative measurement of the social impact that Covid-19 has had and will have, alluding to GDP and highlighting the high unemployment rate and the environmental problems arising from the current health crisis.

EUROPEAN VOCATIONAL SKILLS WEEK 2020 – DISCOVER Your Talent. Your Journey. Your Choice.

On Friday 13 November 2020, the webinar « CILIFO Project »: INTRODUCTION TO THE EUROPEAN FUNDS » will take place from 11:00 to 12:30 (Brussels time) as part of the fifth European Vocational Skills Week.

This training day on European financial sources is organised by the Finnova Foundation as part of its actions as a beneficiary of the CILIFO Project, financed by the Interreg POCTEP programme (2014-2020), and as part of European Vocational Training Week 2020. The conference aims to reach young people, as well as the general public, interested in the subject of forest fire prevention and extinction, adaptation and mitigation to climate change, on aspects related to the European financial sources available for vocational training, as well as for projects that promote youth employment in rural areas, and especially in the subject of CILIFO.

CILIFO has an extensive training programme which covers various target groups, from operational personnel involved in fire prevention and extinguishing plans, professionals and civil servants in the sector, companies and entrepreneurs, teachers and teaching staff, as well as young people who are committed to finding a professional future in the field of forest fire prevention and extinguishing, adaptation and mitigation of climate change in rural areas.

The webinar will also feature speakers who will present mobility programmes that make it possible to receive funding for professional exchanges or volunteering within the EU. Beneficiaries of these programmes will also take part in the event and will explain how their professional experience has improved as a result of participating in these initiatives. Examples of good practice and funding programmes such as Erasmus+ will also be studied, among others, where they are committed to training for the qualification of firefighters and other groups working in the prevention and extinction of forest fires, and the conservation of our natural habitat.

This conference therefore opens up new possibilities for the employability of CILIFO’s target audience. The aim of the conference is to support young people through training initiatives that favour recruitment in CILIFO’s areas and themes, generating opportunities at local and regional level in CILIFO’s intervention territory, the Euroregion Alentejo-Algarve-Andalucía.

To register to the event, click here. The European Vocational Skills Week, organised by the European Commission, is an annual event during which local, regional or national organisations showcase the best of vocational education and training (VET) – a sector capable of empowering all people with the skills they need for a fulfilling personal and professional life. After five editions, the event has become a sought-after exchange platform for VET stakeholders around Europe and beyond.

This year’s edition will be a hybrid event taking place in-person in Berlin (Germany) and digitally across the EU from 9-13 November 2020. The Week 2020 will play a particularly important role, given the challenges Europe’s VET community is facing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It provides an unrivalled forum for identifying common problems and exchanging solutions.

The focus of the 2020 edition will be on “VET for Green and Digital Transitions” in line with the Commission’s priorities on a European Green Deal and a Europe fit for the digital age.

The overall objectives of the Week are to:

· Showcase the many ways VET can help young people and adults to ‘discover their talent’ and prepare today for Europe’s economy of the future.

· Demonstrate to employers the enormous benefits of investing in human resources by supporting the initial training of young people, as well as the upskilling and reskilling of adults, particularly in a post-COVID-19 world.

· Validate the choices people make when they choose VET, by showing its competitive value.

· Develop an awareness of European Vocational Skills Week, building on the success of previous campaigns.

More than 100 people attend the third CILIFO webinar as part of #EUGreenWeek2020

21.10.2020. European Green Week (#EUGreenWeek), organised by the European Commission, focuses this year on nature and biodiversity. The Finnova Foundation, the entity which will benefit from the INTERREG-CILIFO project, prepared a localised event to form part of a week which will act as a milestone on the way to the Conference of the Parties (COP 15) to the Convention on Biological Diversity, in collaboration with the University of Cadiz, which is also part of the CILIFO project partnership.

Last Monday, 19 October 2020, the Iberian Centre for Research and Fight Against Forest Fires (CILIFO) held the third event of the CILIFO Project within the framework of #EUGreenWeek – it has planned another in Córdoba, on European Union funding for innovative projects to fight forest fires and protect biodiversity. The event was partially focused on the applications of unmanned aerial vehicles for the extinction and prevention of forest fires.

The highest number of visitors at Zoom was 60, however, the total number of people registered at Zoom for the event was 107 (but not all were connected at the same time).

During the session on Community financial sources for projects with innovative solutions in the prevention and extinction of forest fires and the protection of biodiversity, public entities intervened, such as the Directorate General of European Funds of the Ministry of Finance of the Government of Spain or the Agency for the Environment and Water of Andalusia (AMAYA) – Government of Andalusia. In addition, several initiatives were presented, such as the implementation of drones with thermal cameras to control the dead zones of the fires; or materials that hydrate and when thrown into the fire manage to extinguish a fire by themselves and at the same time increase the percentage of reforestation of the area after the fire has passed.

Below you can read some of the statements of the speakers who participated in the third CILIFO webinar in the framework of #EUGreenWeek:

Adrián Vecino Varela, technical advisor to the Ministry of Finance – Directorate General of European Funds.

“So far we have obtained these data with the aid we have received: 546,430 hectares are receiving conservation aid; 320,142.50 square metres of space in urban areas have been created or rehabilitated; 14,604.39 tonnes more of waste recycling capacity; more than 1.5 million people have benefited from protection against forest fires; and more than 1.5 million people have benefited from flood prevention measures”.

CILIFO_EUGW_2020_POCTEP

Inmaculada Vázquez, from the Andalusian Environment and Water Agency (AMAYA) – Andalusian Regional Government.

“Among the objectives that CILIFO has, we can highlight the strengthening and pooling of cooperation, working procedures and training in the prevention and extinction of forest fires, promoting innovation to prevent large forest fires and improving the response capacity to forest fires on the part of the administrations and authorities involved in fighting them in the three participating regions”.

“In order to give continuity to CILIFO, a new application called FIREPOCTEP has been submitted under the same heading, with the aim of strengthening cross-border systems for preventing and extinguishing forest fires and improving resources for generating rural employment, acting in the development, protection and promotion of the natural heritage, researching and innovating in the environmental field and improving the institutional capacity of administrations and the public sector”.

Luis Carlos Barbero González, Professor of Petrology and Geochemistry and Director of the Department of Earth Sciences – Campus of International Excellence CEI-MAR of the University of Cadiz

On the realistic application of the drones on the ground in fire crisis situations: “the thermal cameras guided the firefighters very reliably to manage the fires by guiding them through the smoke, they should be used in fires that are not very large and in which the economic resources are rather high, in addition the monitoring and control tasks that the drones would have during rainy conditions should be improved”.

Lourdes González, technical coordinator of the CILIFO project at the ONCE Foundation and technology and accessibility expert at the ONCE Foundation

“Through training and the employability of people with disabilities, getting involved in a project in which we promote universal accessibility, in which people with disabilities have no physical barriers to communication and technology. In addition, they carry out training so that if a professional meets a person with a disability he or she can evacuate them in the correct way, communicate with them, etc. And from November (2020), a 15-hour course will begin on what to do when interacting with someone with a disability”.

Juan Viesca, Director of European Funds at the Finnova Foundation.

“The European Commission announced a new programme with 750,000 million euros to replace the crisis and propose new solutions, within which there is the REACT UE programme, a programme that could complement the structural funds with 50,000 million euros. In addition, there is a specific call for the fight and prevention of forest fires as part of the Green Deal call for innovative proposals that ends in January 21, which is a very good opportunity for the speakers at this webinar to be financed by this type of programme”.

Alberto Navarro, Director of Projects, Human Resources and Training at the Finnova Foundation.

Alberto presented two E-learning platforms available within the CILIFO Project to the attendees, with innovations such as gamification processes, encouraging interaction through the website with the students, with mini-games and as the course progresses: “a city is created, comparing the construction of a city with the training that is gradually taking place in each of the students”.

José María Gómez, Chief Financial Officer of Drone Hopper

“Our mission is to develop all the aeronautical platforms and aircraft so that we can consolidate ourselves as a reference in this field and, above all, we want to solve the problem of fire and fire-fighting. Our solution is to offer our services to work 24/7 and try to minimize risks regarding fire fighting”.

CILIFO_EUGW_Drone_Hopper.pdf

Jacobus Benedik, representative of Scodev

“Scodev’s idea is a device by which conventional aircraft could assist in fire-fighting, allowing a common aircraft to collect water from the sea, a river or a lake at a height of 50 feet and pour it over the affected area up to 5 times per hour. This method will expand the resources of any municipality in using fire-fighting tools.

Pedro Ruíz, Director of Innovation at Integrasys SA

“We developed an application for tracking (positioning) and communication when facing fire, combining several technologies, such as the new European satellite positioning system Galileo. We are also mixing new communication technologies to ensure that we always have communication at all times and in adverse situations”.  Thanks to these features, firefighters will be able to face the fire as well informed and positioned as possible, which is certainly a great approach.

Leonardo Rico Fernández, General Manager of Lluvia Sólida.

“Lluvia Sólida” is a technology that retains water up to 400 times its weight in water, and we place it at the root, thanks to this the plant will remain hydrated for weeks without the need for water or rain, after which it returns to its original granulated state and is rehydrated with the next watering or rain, reducing the frequency of watering. As far as fire fighting is concerned, what we do is throw the already hydrated granulate at a prudent distance from the fire, creating a stream of solid water, leaving the fire to go out by itself, and after these fires it is reforested with solid water again and can be saved in around 70% to 80% of the reforested areas”.

Alberto López Casillas technician from the Department of European Affairs, Energy and Tourism of Ávila Provincial Council.

“The aim of the GEFRECON project is to reduce the risk of forest fires in the POCTEP territory by developing and implementing joint plans to raise awareness among other types of actors, so that this type of case can be managed jointly and damage can be minimised. The first of these tools is a GIS (Geographical Information System) in which a landowner or municipality can select an area in which they intend to analyse the potential for use of biomass and the cost of extracting this biomass and taking it to a transformation centre”.

The City Council of Fuerteventura presents “Fuerteventura SOS Water RESCUE” in the #EURegionsWeek

Brussels, 19.10.2020 – On 20th October 2020, the Finnova Foundation and the Fuerteventura City Council will present a unique event in the Canary Islands: “Fuerteventura SOS Water RESCUE”. The webinar will take place between 10:00 and 13:00 and is part of the European Commission’s Week of Regions and Cities.

In October 2019, the Fuerteventura Island City Council, through its Department of the Environment, The Fight against Climate Change, The Circular Economy and R+D+I directed by Marlene Figueroa, launched a strategic study aimed at defining the circular economy on the island, within the framework of the commitments of the United Nations Agenda 2030 for Sustainable Development Goals. The objective of this strategy was to diagnose and plan the different actions that would be carried out in the short, medium and long term and that would be committed to this cause of a European and global magnitude: an economic system that would generate new green jobs, both public and private, together with a renewable energy policy that would guarantee an efficient use and management of our environment, our resources and our waste.

Access to quality water is essential for health and human development. On the island of Fuerteventura almost all of the water consumed comes from desalination plants. Of this amount, more than 50% of the liquid is lost when it leaves the plants, which has a significant impact on the environment, energy and economy. For this reason, the treatment of wastewater as well as the system for supplying drinking water must play a fundamental role in mitigating climate change and in optimal human development. At the same time, improving waste management to achieve a fully circular economy remains another priority for the EU. All of the above is in line with SDGs 6, 7 and 13. Fuerteventura S.O.S Water Rescue aims to be an international showcase for the circular water economy.

Fuerteventura has been obtaining drinking water from seawater for over 40 years, using a unique method, water desalination stations. The Island City Council considers it necessary to implement new policies aimed at the circular economy, not only focusing on extraction, manufacture, use and disposal. It is necessary to close the cycle by reducing waste and/or extending its useful life.

Prevention of forest fires and protection of biodiversity: the main topics of the second side event of the CILIFO Project in the #EUGreenWeek

01.10.2020. Organised by the European Commission, the EU Green Week (#EUGreenWeek) will focus this year on Nature and Biodiversity. Finnova Foundation, one of the beneficiaries of the INTERREG-CILIFO Project, has organised a side event in order to take part of a week that will set a milestone towards the Conferences of the Parties (COP 15) to the Convention on Biological Biodiversity.

On Monday, 28 September 2020, the Iberian Centre for Research and Forest Firefighting (CILIFO) has held the second side event for the CILIFO Project in the framework of the #EUGreenWeek in collaboration with GoHub, the open innovation hub of Global Omnium.

The person charged of the opening of the event was Juan Sánchez Ruiz, director of the Regional Operational Centre (INFOCA) of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Sustainable Development (Regional Government of Andalusia). He emphasized the importance of the reinforcement of infrastructures jointly used for fighting against forest fires.

In this second event of CILIFO during the EU Green Week, the vice-president of the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and Member of the European Parliament, César Luena, participated talking about the project that is going to be submitted to the European Commission to combat forest fires and preserve biodiversity. Among the measures, Luena talked about the post-fire recovery of the affected areas, the protection of freshwater ecosystems —such as restoring rivers—, the regulation of waters in order to avoid ecological disaster, the legal protection of soils, a specific plan for desertification and a European forest policy. His aim is to create a joint action plan for fighting against climate change and biodiversity.

In the first part of the event about prevention, extinction of forest fires and protection of biodiversity, Ana Lourido from the academic domain (University of Ébora) gave her insight about research and combating forest fires. ‘We have an opportunity to make a qualitative and quantitative leap in the fight against forest fires in order to progress in research.’ Afterwards, Javier Madrigal Olmo, senior scientist of the forest fire lab at the Forest Research Center of INIA spoke about the vulnerability face to forest fires and how science and technology can help prevention. As for Javier Cañas Andreu, director of Innovation Projects at EIT Climate-KIC, pointed that the increase of temperatures, the low rate of rain and the subsequent droughts are some of the causes of forest fires in Andalusia.

The topic of the second part of the event was funding and entrepreneurship. María Gil Cabrera¸ director of GoHub Andalucía, and Juan Viesca, EU Funds director de at Finnova Foundation, talked about financing at the European Union and innovative projects in the forest fire sector. It is worth highlighting that the European Green Deal call is now open for fighting against climate change and making Europe climatically neutral by 2050. Adrián Noheda, director of CILIFO’s Firefighting Open Innovation Lab, and David Páez Rodríguez, director de Business Development at the Technological Corporation of Andalusia, spoke about the opportunities for entrepreneurship at protected forest areas.

The event closed with the intervention of Alejandro García Hernández, deputy director of COR, from the INFOCA Plan (Directorate General for Environmental Management and Protected Areas of the Regional Government of Andalusia), who presented the project FIREPOCTEP. On the other hand, Gustavo Viera Ruiz from GESPLAN talked about the success cases on forest fire management.

COMMON CHALLENGES – SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS (SDGs)

The aim is to address the SDGs 6, 13 and 15 of the UN in order to innovate in the adoption of urgent measures to combat climate change and its effects, as well as to protect, restore and promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, fight against desertification, stop and invert the degradation of soils and stop the biodiversity loss. In addition, the availability and sustainable management of water needs to be guaranteed for fighting climate change.
